I love the quote from the construction worker who was issued a camera to take before and after photos of construction sites, but instead chose to use it to photograph nature. "I've shot millipedes, turtles, fish, and iguanas so far," he says. "I don't think I've used it for work yet."

Well, I wish I had Flash ... No, it won't work on this FreeBSD machine, but I'll check this out later elsewhere. It looks to be good, from the previews.

Does National Geographic still exclusively use 35mm? Or has something changed with digital photography?

Oh wow. I was just looking at "Natty Geo"'s photo site to pick out a desktop backgroup for my new computer. It never occurred to me to make a FPP about it. I also had never seen the user galleries - thanks!

(By the way, the picture I chose was this one.)

Not sure, but I was flicking through a relatively recent special edition on Mexico, and was stunned to read that the photographers they sent ripped through something in the order of 30,000 rolls of film, to get the few dozen shots selected for publication.

all about the photos

"Old Yellow" has a well deserved reputation for photography, but the articles are top notch as well - I know one of the senior editors and have been to the offices, each story has citations galore, 2 or 3 per sentence in some cases, it's worse than the most fastidious Wikipedia article. But the citations are removed for publication, for internal use should someone make an inquiry. It's really one of the most reliable resources, unlike a daily newspaper, they have months to fact check a story and whole teams of people. Every issue has at least 1 or 2 must read articles that easily stand apart from the pictures.
