Kind of a big difference between the "proven success" (winners get legal help with their green card process, which is obviously legal (that's why it's called "legal help", not "illegal help")) and the "hook a citizen" (show founded on marriage in order to secure a visa, which is illegal).

From the Independent: The more important prize, however, would be the chance to circumvent the visa-application process and secure permanent residency.

"Circumvent" the process through marriage? End up hip-deep in it, more like. And I'm pretty certain that even the most generous USCIS agent (and they do exist, albeit few and far between) would find a reality-show marriage to be prima facie evidence of fraud.

As FoB points out, the Indy is demonstrating a basic lack of understanding about the US process. Being married doesn't guarantee you a green card, residency, an entry visa or anything else.

Being married to an Irish citizen gives me automatic right of abode in Ireland, the right to work the moment my plane touches down on Irish soil, and the right to apply for an Irish passport after 5 years here. Being married to me, a US citizen, doesn't get my husband squat except access to an unbearably long application process.

Who Will Get to Marry a U.S. Citizen?
One will win and get to stay in the country!

Please Note: This show does NOT marry people nor do we guarantee a marriage will result from the show. We do not book illegal immigrants on our show. We DO NOT give out green cards or visas. That's the government's job!

Oh, okay. So besides screw with people by promising them stuff you aren't going to give them, what is it you do exactly?

Appeal to deep seated xenophobia?

Sell advertising spots?

It's patently illegal. Also, as DarlingBri and others note, being married to a US citizen does not get you an automatic visa, much less a Green Card.

This may fit nicely into the Tuesday night slot, right after Treadmill to Bucks and before Swim the Crocodiles comes on.
