"Christmas Makes Me Blue": Simone White

Simone White can help calm your holiday rage. White is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter whose new CD, "I Am The Man" has been inching its way up the indie charts; people have been comparing her voice to Karen Dalton and Billie Holiday, but she's really her own creature, as you can tell from this dreamy new video, well-timed for the seasonal onslaught of consumerism and carols: "Christmas Makes Me Blue."

Whew. I didn't want to be the first one to make a comment here, thus setting a bad tone for the thread.

I think she'd have to do alot more dope or spend some time in jail before her voice can match the hard-luck pain quotient of billie or karen dalton's, but it's nice to listen to nonetheless. thanks!

Wasn't this song in a commercial or something?

I like the meme that something called "Holiday Rage" exists.

Ha ha ha, no.

She does have a nice voice, but c'mon, Billie Holliday's got some mighty big shoes to fill. There's way too much echo in the songs I've listened to so far to fairly judge her voice.

As for the songs, I liked the Christmas one in a Tegan and Sara kind of way. I liked "the beep beep song" from the MySpace a lot better, though.

I think she sounds a bit like Os Mutantes era Rita Lee

I like her music unto itself. I hear the Karen Dalton comparison - something of a light fogginess - but I wouldn't compare her to anyone brilliant (yet). Although I like this from her Myspace page:

"Record Label: Honest Jons/EMI.

Type of Label: Indie."

Heh.

"The American War" has been on my playlist for the last few weeks. She's awesome.

Selling Out to Audi.

I thought it was excruciating to listen to, but then again, I supposedly have awful taste.

Thanks for the tip! I think she sounds interesting...

...but I sure am sick of hearing about every rising chanteuse who sings with a hint of jazz, "she's been compared to Billie Holiday". After a while it starts to sound as cliched as "it tastes like chicken."

The comparison thing is *such* a cliché, I agree. That's why I meant to write "people have been comparing her voice to" said chanteuses, instead of "hey, she sounds just like" X and Y in that post. I was hoping to obviate the inevitable defenses of those singers (another cliché), and to underscore the point that she's unique. Her own creature.

Funny thing, though: I know I typed in those words, and yet to the reader the post seems to say "She sounds just like Karen Dalton and Billie Holiday!" It's surreal, I tell you.

Yup, she sold a song to Audi. As Frm Brklyn noted, she needs to eat.

Oh, I forgot. We prefer our women in music to be impoverished junkies, or out-of-control train-wreck-addicts who can't handle success. That way we don't have to feel bad when we make fun of their bodies.

Good timing! I just interviewed H3rwig Maurer (of the Mankind Liberation Front and New World Revolution) for my site and he mentioned her as one of the artists he'd love to see get more fame and recognition! So, hey, I guess one small step, eh?

EMI is her publisher, not her label.
