The Los Angeles Police Department are enlisting feral cats for rat patrol at police stations that are experiencing rodent problems. These hardworking kitties -- part of the Working Cats Program -- are doing a stellar job keeping the rat population in check.

This is great, especially the bit about the cats planting evidence on some of more elusive rats.

I'm not sure they're going to be very effective against Rommel's Panzers.

Rat Patrol?!? Wilderness of mirrors shine, floorboards creak or footsteps heard; headlights turn into the drive, then disappear into the night.

Really cool. Good deal for the feral kittehs, and good deal for the flower markets and whereever else that can use the rodent control . . . far better than rat poison, I would think.

Interesting to note that the cats don't really control the population by exterminating the rats, rather they cause the rats to go somewhere else, if I'm reading that correctly.

It's still cool, but I can see this escalating into a feral-cat détente.

(Five years from now)...

The Los Angeles Police Department are enlisting feral fisher cats for cat patrol at police stations that are experiencing cat problems. These hardworking ferocious ferrets on crack -- part of the Working Weasels Program -- are doing a stellar job keeping the feral cat population in check.

hortense, that link is hilarious. Well, kind of sad for the cat, but still. I have a feral cat wintering in my garage right now, and I'd like to imagine her sending messages like this to the Pentagon:

Ooh muh widda puddah puddah meow puss, who's a big fatty kissy huggy kitty? We hates the [redacted] [redacted] poopyheads in [redacted], don't we pussakins? Mr BadMan [redacted] is gonna get raped by the sun, init dat right pootypuss? Ay-yuppums cuddle noodles sugar kissykins! How about a smoopy kissypoo for momm- Aiyee- Oh alright, here's your damn Fancy Feast. See ya tomorrow, ingrate.

Can we send a few to Congress and the White House?

There really isn't a need for more pussies in Congress at the moment. The Democrats are full up and the Republican's don't seem to have a use for them.
