Sorry if anyone thinks this would have been more appropriate in one of the threads below. And, of course, it's slightly out-of-date now. But:

1) It's interesting background and
2) I'm getting annoyed with the number of people - including, it seems, some elements within the current US Government - responding to the current contretemps with Cold War-style grandstanding and shallow nationalism.

Hitchens never misses a chance to bash Clinton. He might have mentioned that the berets to be made in China total 3.5 million and that they are getting our business for this item because American industry is no longer capable of making that many in the time required. There is but one company in this business in America and they can not make that many.
Shame they can't die the old ones black or keep the ones they had previous to the silly decision to spend more money and sent the bucks elsewhere.
When I read this article I get the impression Chris is saying America dumb; China bad but someday might get better.
Meanwhile it was the chamber of commerce types and not the "lefties" who decided that human rites gets trumped by MONEY manking. My Nikes, made in China, cost the same as when America made running shoes. Somebody, not me, realized the difference in labor saving costs.
