Scotch mist. An hour long film with Radiohead in it made for New Year's Eve, 2007. Features every song on their album In Rainbows.

You really don't want to watch this on youtube. There just might be a torrent around somewhere.

Whew! For a minute there I thought James Brown might be dead!

you don't even need a torrent, you can download it for free as a podcast from the iTunes Store.

The original airing of this, in the States at least, was on Current TV, which currently provides the broadcast in higher quality than the youtube version. To be honest, "Sky Sports" excepted, the show kind of left me flat; all of the songs were basically played straight and didn't add much to the album versions. The earlier webcasts had more variety, with covers, DJ sets, etc.

The podcast is great (thanks, heeeraldo!), but it's only 4 of the Scotch Mist tracks, plus some of the thumbs_down versions. So yeah, you need torrent or YouTube to get the whole thing.

(But Jigsaw Falling Into Place is so much more awesome in the thumbs_down version.)

You know, I like Radiohead quite a lot, but I bet that there are people around here somewhere who don't particularly. I'd really like their input in this thread. Now where are those little scamps?

Any second now.

Guys?

Underrated album. Thanks for pointing this out. Downloading a torrent.

Am I the only person instantly thought of the 'Scotch Mist' episode of Garth Marenghi's Dark Place?

I'm going to restrain myself from reposting my couple of hundred word rant about how much I hated the slow motion video for Nude. You're welcome.

Otherwise, I really liked the ondes-heavy rendition of Jigsaw in this one; better than the album version, in fact.

Erm... okay. It had to do with the video's invitation to watch them in action, to give up their performing bodies for our inspection. That invitation is the implicit subtext of that part of film vocabulary which is extreme slow motion, which demands this minute gaze (the clip in real time lasts about 10 seconds; it's been dilated to fill four minutes). It reeks of Meaning, and of self-regard. Placing their images, their (now sexualized) bodies in front of their audience in such a way is something that they've managed to reject since they got creative control of their videos and photo shoots (and lord knows there are some cringe-worthy moments in their past before that happened; see the Anyone Can Play Guitar video, for example). I mean, it's not like the sex isn't there: any bunch of men who get onstage with guitars and microphones know that. It's just that RH are usually much more subtle about their vanities; for the last ten years or so they've managed to project the idea that they're primarily interested in the music, and that their physical presences are secondary to the music's importance. You know what I mean? It's not like Jonny doesn't slyly play on his extraordinary looks, but he doesn't exactly come out on stage in a leather jumpsuit much as some people might like him to and that's the way I, at least, prefer it. I like their geeky, jeans and running shoes personas. While the Nude video was playing all that was gone, negated by the bodies moving in that ponderous fashion.

But, you know, that's just me. Lots of people love it. And it's really just a blip. (I think it only bothered me enough to spell all that out because I'm unused to them doing anything I disagree with, or don't like.)

Phew, good thing Radiohead got this out there, otherwise I might not have known about their new album IN RAINBOWS, available now for downloading on their website!

I took all that slo-mo writhing as a bit of self-mockery, especially given the track's title, but I can see how it could play the other way.

At least they didn't choose to make a tribute to Ann Marget's big scene in Tommy.

I thought the Nude video was fucking hilarious, personally. I was literally cracking up. I think it was meant to be taken sort of tongue-in-cheek. Honestly, that kind of portrayal magnifies ugliness, not sexiness. Hilariously.

I think maybe the thing is an hour long and lackig some their usual pleasantly-indulgent webcast silliness so that it fits conveniently in a broadcast hour for Current.tv.

I enjoyed it. They did a more typical-for-them webcast recently enough that I'm not missing the covers or DJing. I wish they'd had time to play one or two songs from the bonus tracks though.

Currently, I'm liking the versions of Bodysnatchers and Videotape from this more than their respective album versions. The former is more visceral, the latter more sublime.

Also, Banky, the download thing was shut down about a month ago. Experimet had run its course, and it was time to make way for the standard retail release.

I just figured the Nude video was a poorly executed Portishead homage.

Yeah, possible. Not a very good match with a song so solemn and beautiful, though, imo. But nevermind.

And sparkletone, agreed on Videotape, too-- it was like a nice middle ground between the live version from the summer of 2006 and the album version.

But the rest was great. Couldn't help but wonder how Stanley's piece about "piss foam parties" was going to be taken, but it was hilarious nevertheless.

OK, that's some weird synchronicity. I taped this on New Year's Eve and we finally watched it last night. And tonight, maudlin, we watched Tommy, and I just spent the past half hour reading about the careers of the various participants, including Ms. Olssen ...
