Some people have built some seriously tricked out home theaters.

Note to self: There is apparently great profit to be made in separating Star Trek-loving fools from their money.

If only the Star Trek movies were half as good as some of those home theaters are cool...

They have Bobba Fett staring at them during the movie. Nooooooo thaaaanks!

Ok yeah...I'm jealous.

I have spent years - years! - on the intarwebs ogling things. Things that I am ashamed to admit turn me on. Things that I am ashamed to admit I covet. Things that my friends, family, colleagues, lovers, even Dan Savage, would be shocked and horrified to find out I spend time looking at.

But never have I been quite so ashamed to admit that I really, really, really want the evergreen ultimate theater.

The only thing that bugs me is that all of those systems seem to be sporting armchairs rather than couches. Nothing is more awesome than sprawling out and taking up a whole couch yourself.

But other than that - *drool*

How do you cuddle with your sweetie while watching a movie?
posted by blue_beetle at 6:09 PM on January 24, 2008

Cuddling with sweeties implies existence of said sweeties, which these theatrical abominations would seem to preclude, blue_beetle. But I could be wrong.

First off, how the bat cave one doesn't have a fireman's pole entrance is beyond my comprehension.

Second off, the thread title mentions a couch, but I didn't see that, or any sort of chair that seats more then one in any of the rooms. Aren't they missing the best part of watching a movie at home on a nice system vs. the public theater?

Such is the lonely life of the audio/video elite I guess . . . .

To be fair, what old money thinks is "hip" is also pretty funny.

It's a given that there will be Star Wars and Star Trek home theatres. But what of one based on the original Planet of the Apes with a Zaius Vision animation before each screening? And a Zaius clip that dazzles the audience with his wisdom.

A Tardis one would be of interest.

The Batcave and the Titanic ones are the best, though both Star Trek and Star Wars ones are nice, too. Bright walls are a mistake, though. A theater should be dark.

And what's with the chairs? Not one of these theaters has a couch. Do the superrich not want to sprawl out or cuddle up with a sweetheart?

Look closer -- the chairs have cupholders.

It means the popcorn bowl is in your lap -- as God intended.

Why is nobody going for the 'Big Lebowski' - themed home theater?

Because I'm a total girl, I like the Titanic one. But the bat cave would be so. Frickin'. AWESOME.
posted by katillathehun at 7:04 PM on January 24, 2008

After lengthy deliberation, I've decided that the Enterprise one wins. I mean, just WINS.

Never mind that I've never seen Star Trek. Ever. It's sleek and pretty and well-designed and it's got a bar area! I don't even drink! But the bar is so cute. Although to be fair, it was a toss-up between that and the Bat Cave.

I really, really need to stop looking at this. Money is for tuition, not ridiculous lavish home theatre systems.

Some of this pics look, well... rendered. Like the Nautilus one, for instance.

The Titanic looks like the only one I could really relax and enjoy a movie in (despite not caring for the click). The rest look kind of uncomfortable, with the possible exception of the first enterprise. I mean, if I want to see Star Wars, isn't that what the screen is for? Not so much the walls.

And yes...where are the couches?

Yes, I was kind of disappointed that the Nautilus one wasn't more steampunky. Uh, and that I don't have the spare $100k to make one better.

OK, I changed my mind. Is it too much to ask for a Half Life 2 home theater?

Or a Portal home theater? Please?

In an I, Claudius-themed home theater, all you'd have is couches.

I think I'd enjoy a movie or two in these, then I'd get bored with it and it would start to become mildly creepy.

I'm afraid the only private theatres I've attended required the insertion of tokens.

It'd be nice to have a house to fit one of these. I was hoping for something a bit more accessible, something with real ideas of how to do it nice.

Funny enough, the Indiana Jones theme first struck me as a salute to The Egyptian theater in Hollywood. I find it kind of lame that it's not.

(the fact that they reconstructed that dome is totally awesome, though.)

These are nothing. I spared no expense to make my home theater into a perfect replica of my living room. I would take pictures, but you'd think they were photoshopped or something. "That looks just like his living room!" you'd cry in delight upon viewing the painstaking detail and hard work gone into the making of my "Living Room" home theater.

I have a couch too. Just like the one in my actual living room, I found it on the side of the road.

The folk who did the evergreen one also do couches.
posted by dchase at 7:54 AM on January 25, 2008

The reason that there's generally chairs instead of couches and such in the home theaters generally comes down to a code issue. To get approval from building officials, a home theater has to have fixed seats; otherwise the room would have to be designed as a "sleeping room" (basically a room that could potentially be a bedroom if someone else moved into the house or your priorities changed), and would then have to have a window for natural ventilation and/or fire escape, and the window would have to be a certain size and blah blah blah. Nobody wants a window in their fancy home theater (people who opt for the "living room" home theater look excepted), so they end up buying the chairs you see in the photos from the theater installation companies so that they can actually get the rooms built. I don't know why the theater companies don't have an option for a couch than can be fixed to the floor (I think I might have worked on one that had a loveseat in it, but my memory is hazy on that one), or if that would pass muster with the building department. Otherwise, I think that people that build these sorts of things generally want their theaters to be more authentically movie-theaterish, so they go with the more movie-theater type chairs.

It struck me this morning that watching Titantic, which is about a giant ship sinking, in a theater designed to look like said ship, would be pretty creepy.

Especially if you built the home theater in a large elevator shaft so the room would sink in real time.

Too bad these people don't spend that money on renovating a classic old theater.

Nautilus for me, please. But I'm surprised by how far the seats are from the screens in most of these theaters -- isn't part of the fun having a really good view of the screen?

They should just go the whole way and put aquariums in where the windows should be.

I like the Titanic best primarily because it resembles and old movie palace. Now, that's a cenematic environment.
