Nice! I am inordinately fascinated by "recent" ruins.

Here's the island on Google Maps.

Nice ruins. Sweet. I wanna go there.

What I find kind of surprising is that this isn't owned by some mega-rich person who lives on it, in some splendiferous abode. Some captain of finance, say, who works daily in NYC and returns each night to his own little island. Boat dock, tennis court, swimming pool, jogging path, plenty of trees... amirite?

"used to be a quarantine zone"... "USED" to be???

Do you think that blue thingie with feathers on its head is a "bird"?

(chuckles) Oh my dear, you are SO naive. Next thing you'll be telling me is that this is a work of fiction.

Virtual Earths views are awesome, but Google was worth it for me just for the ability to zoom out and realise where it is. When they say NY they really do mean NY!

Further upstate, the Bowne Hospital in Poughkeepsie was originally intended to house tuberculosis patients; in 1957, the grounds were renovated into Dutchess Community College, with Bowne (Hall) serving as classroom space.

Waterfont: A Walk around Manhattan by Phillip Lopate has a chapter on North Brother Island. Based on the book I've been wanting to kayak there for awhile. I always try to check it out when I'm fling into LaGuardia.

So cool. They've already converted all our tuberculosis sanitariums here in Chicago into other stuff so there's no spooky ruins to poke around. I'm jealous.
