Blue, green and grey must have a calming effect. Elsewhere, discussions can be...ignited. Flame Warriors. via

Actually, it's the banhammer.

A couple of whacks with that, to noggins sundry, can make things downright placid.

Fuck you Malor, you moran. No offense, Malor, but I respectfully beg to differ.

Wow, I guess it's that time again. And by that, I mean 1997. Or whenever this list was first posted to MeFi.

So, five/eight years has passed and this is still relevant. That says a lot about the internet.

Can't wait to see this post in 2015!

Which is the best forum to meet the greatest number of these people at one time?

This has been accurate since dial-up BBS days when most of you weren't even old enough to wear diapers.

I think when this first appeared one could have made a Dokken reference and seemed timely.

I found "evil clown" to be particularly interesting since here, the evil clown persona seems to have evolved into an anti-flame device. "Uh oh! The Randroids and the neo-socialists are squaring off for a heated (and tedious) debate. This looks like a job for......Evil Clown!"

Cons: Any real discussion will be washed away in a tidal wave of "fatuous quips".

Pros: Any real discussion was going to be washed away by a tidal wave of lame philosophy, weak theory, made up as I go along data and blatant insults.

Sometimes it's better to pull back and nuke it from orbit. Only way to be sure.

Ear Bucket: Thanks. Now I'm going to have every song from 1776 stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

I was going to say this has been accurate since the days of mimeographed 'zines that came and went via the mail, but then I remembered Voltaire and Leibniz....

These people were painting unpleasantries on cave walls. And, before that, if Erich von Daniken is to be believed, they were flaming the stars.

The real question is, what type of flame warrior are you? Or at least what type are you most of the time, as I strongly suspect that pretty much everyone has more than one type.

I seem to have many of the characteristics of the Atheist, and the Ideologue. Though hopefully I've avoided Pinko or Ferrous Cranus status.

And fatluigi I think it'll be pretty much identical in 2015, or 2515 for that matter.

I remember this from when I used to argue in the #atheism channel on DALnet. This was the late 90s. :-)

I have fond memories of being a Net-Rat, I built a long term friendship with a twenty something woman when I was like, twelve, and when I eventually told her I seem to recall a response of, "Oh shit I've been advocating marijuana use to a minor!".

Good times.

As I declared eight years ago, I did NOT pose for this illustration, however, artist Mike Reed did get my hair almost perfect.

That said, when is this thread going to address the real issue: Mr. Flame Warrior's abysmal taste in clothes?

Xenophobe is usually a long-term discussion forum participant and he thinks of the forum as his private compound. Xenophobe regards new forum arrivals as mentally deficient and perhaps even having criminal tendencies, and they are invariably approached with suspicion and condescension. Xenophobe will mount a furious attack if a Newbie has the temerity to make critical observations about the forum's social dynamics, or questions its prevailing opinions.

Leave it up, please? I mean, it's not quite the original website... it's been updated a lot ... a lot of people liked it...I know some entertaining HTML.... Well, dang.
