The trials and musical triumphs of Mario

Some people like to make things difficult for Mario, but others like to make it easy (and musical!).

That last link is a masterpiece of obsessive construction. I wish I recognized more of the songs though.

The level depicted in that last link is absolutely amazing. I can only imagine how long that took, and what level of expertise it took to even conceive of such a thing. I can only hope that its designer is either a multibillionaire or chronically unemployed.

Also, those Asshole Mario levels represent some gonzo creativity. It really goes to show you what a terrific sandbox Super Mario World really was. So many delightful creatures with their various rules.

Color me impressed -- that last link was clever and well executed. It's like a Rube Goldberg side scroller.

Wait a second... Mario could slide around on those rope things? I thought they were only for those weird chainsaw things to, um, travel around?

I'm not a console geek but that last link makes me giddy. If there's any justice in the world then the designer will get laid by a dozen cute nerdcore peeps of his or her preferred gender for their effort.

That last link was amazing, and just at the point (about six and a half minutes in) when I was like, "cool, but I get it already," they come in with the Dr. Wily stage one music from Mega Man 2. Awesome.

That was an amazing peice of work! It struck me in three distinct but equal meters:

1. The sheer ingenuity of it, any of these mario autoplay levels are fascinating in a "wow, I never would have thought of that" way, seeing recognizable pieces operating in a completely foreign fashion for a different purpose. Sweet.

2. The gamer in me, and the instinctual suspense; "You're TOO CLOSE! Get back! Oh shit he's gonna-- ahhg!!" but then he doesn't. phew!

3. The reflexive cringing of trying to share this with anyone but my gamer friends. I envision trying to show my parents this and why it's neat:

Uther: Check out this video, this guy made a level that plays itself and the sound effects from the game go along with the music !
Dad: Is this Mario brothers?
Mom: Oh I remember this, you used to have this game! You were so excited when you got your Super Nintendo
Uther: Yeah, but see, the level is designed to-
Mom: Wow this guy is good, he's going awful fast!
Dad: What am I looking at, is this you playing?
Uther: No see, listen it goes along with the music, the game is playing itself
Dad: What the hell are you talking about? No one's playing anything.
Mom: Oh I remember this, where you make music and mario hops on the notes and things, the game with the mouse! I didn't know you could do all this with it!
Dad: So does he win or what?
Uther: ...

Truly this is a work of art.

why no, I haven't considered therapy, why do you ask?

It was almost certainly sound edited, but even that only detracts a bit from it when you see the scale of the thing. That's some pretty awesome nerdcore obsession, right there. I even laughed out loud once or twice.

I clicked the first link, and I think I felt sympathy pain for Mario once or twice. Jesus H.

Balls. I thought this was about the guy who got booted from Dancing With the Stars.

That musical mario level is delightful. I grinned ear-to-ear. Not only was it on beat but it was IN KEY. Amazing.

It was clever, but fuck the simple EuroTechno.
posted by Frasermoo at 8:59 PM on May 8, 2008

technically, it's eurobeat, but it's japanese, not euro.

anyone know if he used the game engine for the music and effects or just the effects with the music played in the background? i mean, these mario hacks are pretty cool but would be even cooler if he's not just layering the effects on music added later.

sweet post, btw. anyone wanna weigh in: is it art?

I'm about five minutes in and I've recognized two songs so far. BOOYAH. :D

Definitely art man.

Dillonlikescookies writes "anyone wanna weigh in: is it art?"

It's not a question of whether or not this is art, but can other things still be called art in light of this.

Sorry, flatluigi ... your "sung better" has all of the notes and none of the artistry.

(Or were you saying that it was sung better than your first link?)
posted by Dave Faris at 9:20 PM on May 9, 2008

The latter.

Also, now that I realize 'Asshole Mario' is a SMW hack and not the stupid MB hack, here's some great commentated playthroughs of Kaizo Mario 1 and Kaizo Mario 2.
