God Save The Thief (automatic download) is a mashup of The Sex Pistols' "God Save The Queen" and Wolfmother's "Joker and The Thief" mixed by The Illuminoids.

If you like this mashup, make sure to check out The Kleptones who have several albums worth of material for download. And who can forget DJ Lobsterdust. Or read Mashup Town for the latest tracks.

If you don't like this mashup, make sure to check out some Mongolian music.

Why do people spend time on these? They are the musical equivalent of kindergarten collages.

D+. Not a whole lot of mixing going on there. Hint: everything goes better with Radiohead.

@drezdn: I too was hoping for a new Kleptones album mixing up the Sex Pistols and HTTT (though that doesn't sound up their alley - they depend heavily on rap lyrics over music)

Because collage is the art form of the 20th century...oh, right...

I think a good mashup can easily be better than the source material... For example, the Will.I.AM track used as the base for this track is pretty slow and boring, but DJ Lobsterdust manages to turn it into a really catchy song.

I don't like this. It's better than the Wolfmother track on its own, but not as good as the Sex Pistols track left unmolested. I have to say I prefer mashups that combine source material that is more dissimilar; everything in drezdn's link is better. Good stuff here, too.
Also, I loathe Wolfmother.

I love mashups, and am happy that they are reaching a wider audience, but I am left underwhelmed by this particular track.

TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE RIGHT.

That is all.

Oy. Tough crowd here today.

*shrugs*

Oh, well. On to the next one . . .

I love mashups, but I hate the way the original artists are "credited" as [artist] VS [artist]. That evokes imagery of an epic musical showdown for the fate of all of creation, when, in fact, the reality is more like two or more artists imprisoned and forced to each stamp the same license plate at the same time.

In what way, exactly, is that not awesome?

Oy. Tough crowd here today.

Objectively, it's a single-link-mp3-post on MeFi, so you should set your expectations accordingly.

I like the occasional mashup post, since people make good recommendations in the comments, and I can kind of catch up with what's happened on the scene since the last mashup post a few months ago.

oh wait actually its more like 5 or 6 years? When were Mashups big again? 2001-2002? this is really boring.

Eh. I'm not a fan of The Illuminoids. Their (his?) only good track is Dead Mongolian Loser (Beck, Devo, and Bauhaus); the rest are just sloppy.

Mashups as a genre previously, with many examples in the comments.

(a note to the h4t3rz above: don't judge a genre by its mediocre artists.)

I argue that the posting of that link is more my right than yours, seeing as it's my post. *crosse arsms*

Also, both God Save The Queen and Joker And The Thief have been mashed before with much better results.

While my "meh" comment was the result of personal taste, I see that mary8nne has decided to use the well respected metric of hipsterism. I think the fact that mashups existed at some point in time before June 4, 2008 9:50 AM (EST) and that you apparently knew all about them at that time has little or nothing to do with the quality of the post. But thanks for playing.

Jason's_planet, sorry man, I didn't mean to rain on your parade, but it is just a link to a single mashup. Perhaps a whole compilation, or fleshing it out with similar/more mashups/links would have suited it better?

let's go over here and listen to girl talk

Girl Talk is awesome. Here's a concert of his, here's him making a song, and here's a video for Summer Smoke, one of the tracks off of his album Night Ripper.

No harm, no foul. You were just stating your opinion. If I wanted only positive comments on the links I post, there are many fine blogging sites I could use. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for your kind words on my behalf but don't worry too much about her. About half of her comments on MetaFilter have been loud declarations of boredom and the other half have been formulaic America-bashing. So please don't take her too seriously because I certainly don't.

Thanks for the links, flatluigi. Ah 'preciate it.
