"Clueless, obnoxious direct link to an mpeg that woke up my whole house in the middle of the night"?

Zooooom!!!!!

Argh! Direct links to mpegs, I would click but then my system would freeze up. Can't someone just take a few screenshots?

And I'm taking a wild guess here, but :
"What style do you reprs-ant?" "I represent the Monkey Style, of the Wu-Tang school of martial arts" Not very funny, but there's an 'in'-joke in there for me. So, eat me.

Roddi,

That what status bars are for:

I hear this complaint about direct linking over and over, but I don't understand it.

You look at the status bar before every link?

I hear this complaint over and over too, and can't figure out why people don't learn the courtesy to warn people.

Heh heh. I put that link there just to torture rodii. Nice to see that it worked!

Ummm, yeah. Sorry, man just a habit.

Well, good for you. Really. I should too. But a user, especially a dumb one like me, shouldn't *have* to do that. Especially when there's sound involved, a warning would be nice.

I remember sitting in the reference room of the library here, a vast echoey space where you can hear every pre-exam whimper of desperation, and some poor schmoe clicked on some pr0n. Suddenly "AAAH! OH GAWD!!! FUCK ME HAHDAH!!!" comes blasting out and hundreds of people turn to see the poor schmoe frantically clicking, trying to get it to stop, shut off, close, whatever. I wouldn't have been surprised to see him beating on the box with a hammer if he'd had one.

That's why a warning is nice, and people here routinely give one. Thanks to everyone who does.

I see your point. Funny story too.

I'd have to go with John on this one - I always look at what the link is to before I click on it... especially when I have no idea what it's supposed to take me to.

The cool thing is you never know what you'll learn when you post a MPEG of a chimp doing karate.

I'm one of those guys who always looks before he clicks. I hate sites that start playing music because I'm usually listening to music when I'm working. How annoying that they play music. I'm not kidding.

I am also annoyed endlessly by people who do Javascript hacks to put cute phrases like "Love ya baby" in the space where the URL belongs. I rarely go back to those sites. The authors should get over themselves and stop breaking the Web.

End of rant.

While we're on the subject, for those who like to look before they click, here's a Windows proxy utility - Naviscope - that shows what's happening *after* you click. I've been running it for years and couldn't live without it.

Among other "acceleration" features, it also blocks ads. Spend a while configuring it and you'll have a small monitor that only appears when page elements are being downloaded.

Anyway, enough raving... In my opinion, it's definitely not for the casual user, but an excellent tool for those who want to monitor (or selectively delete) each and every HTTP connection.

And here's the best part... It's free.
