I bet there's someone in India who'll do it for a nickel.

Okay, he got me with "Norman Rockwell slapping an orphan with his wang".

Yeah, this is great. I'm definitely going to use this for awesome.

I asked him to draw a picture of a dinosaur fighting a hipster who's wearing a t-shirt with a picture of a dinosaur fighting a hipster.

I think he stole this idea from John Campbell. They were both in The Daily Grind and know of each other so I'm not pulling that out of my ass.

Great idea, and I love the art style too, so I ordered one as well. Thanks, divabat!

#69 "The Black Flag kicking Captain America in the nuts."

Ok, this is good.

NERDFIGHT: not sure how long John Campbell (who is great, previously) has been at it, but my pal Joe Mathlete's (of Marmaduke Explained) has been doing this sort of thing since May of last year.

Ok, I love this one and can't really explain why. My fave.

I want him to draw a giant banner depicting every MeFiMeme.

I'm in. Requested "Cute blonde girl getting ready to leave for college" in honor of my daughter.

Am not crying! There's just some dust in my eye.

Interesting backstory: D.J. Coffman had put his webcomicking on the back burner when he won a 'talent hunt' contest and got a contract to do a series of comic books based on a concept he pitched. Since then, the publisher (NOT one of the biggies) has had financial trouble, Coffman has had problems with them, and they have now apparently canceled the contract and taken possession of his concepts. The $2 cartoons are partly his way of responding to accusations he was a 'commercial whore'... by 'whoring' himself out real cheap. (It's also a killer publicity ploy - it got posted HERE, after all)

I haven't been able to figure out anything for him to draw myself, but I'd like to remind potential customers that one character in his old webcomic is a very well-drawn angry llama.

That explains the amount of llamas that have been requested. I almost thought that it was related in some way to SimCity.

As for 'stealing the idea' this is not the sort of idea that should belong to any one person. Any artist who wants to test himself should give this a go. Sounds like a great way to challenge oneself. It's hard to come up with stuff to draw that you wouldn't normally draw unless you ask other people to think up the stuff for you. Then you can concentrate on responding to the direction given. It's an opportunity to focus the mechanics of the art so one can explore their limitations and discover abilities that they didn't know they had.

Will Draw Anything

+

I’ll do “R” rated, or “R” rated humor, but not “X”. You can probably gauge how far I’ll go by checking out the gallery of previous submissions. If I did X , this would quickly turn into something where I’d have perverts competing for their own jollies, and I’m not into that, sorry.

Hmm. It's pitched as work for hire, but it's not. For $2 you get a copy, not the copyright. Back to the Indian sweatshop artists for me.
posted by orthogonality at 1:13 AM on July 24, 2008

Oh, serious question: I have been thinking of commissioning some simple comic style line-drawings, but as works for hire (meaning, I own the copyright). What should I expect to pay?
posted by orthogonality at 1:15 AM on July 24, 2008

this should be so mashed up with postsecret.com because emos with a guilt complex for no real reason suck.

(seriously; share with us when you can tell us about the time you knifed a toddler with a sense of balance and texture. We don't care about your body image or fidelity issues portrayed as a collage)

Love it - and what a great idea. My guess is that his book of drawings will sell
1. Well
2. For more than $2

I dropped him an email. I have a very specific drawing I want, and I want something more than the 5-minute deal.

Indeed; when you get a song from Andrew (songstowearpantsto) it's yours to keep. One guy even entered it into a contest and won money from it.

Yeah, I sent in an order, too. I felt guilty, though... he's probably gotten swamped. I wish he would raise his price; I'd gladly pay more for his time.

FROM THE SITE:
WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA TO DO THIS?

There’s been some talk that I stole this idea from other cartoonists who shall not be named, BUT I’d like to clear up where I actually got the idea from…. A few years ago, predating anyone who was doing this sort of thing an acquintance of mine named Dan Larson (visit his work!) who was part of the PV Comics hub we were all in did a “Dan Larson Will Draw Anything For A Dollar” and we all thought it was hilarious. He wisely ditched the idea and for years I’ve wanted to try it and never had time, until recently when I was shafted by corporate america. I upped the price to 2 dollars due to inflation and the price of gas and… well, 2 dollars sounds funnier.

For what it's worth, I figured what the hell and paypalled the $2 with a request, weeks ago. No response. The guy either has a very very long backlog, or.

You are not alone, stav. But, I hadn't even thought of it again until this popped up in my recent activity again. No biggie. I guess we'll see.

I ordered my pic just before I posted this to Mefi, and I just received my picture yesterday. He updated his blog with the amount of backorders - in the week(s) since his mention on Mefi and Seth Godin's blog, he's been receiving almost 100 orders a day.
posted by divabat at 7:56 PM on August 9, 2008

Well, that's good then. Thanks for the update, divabat. And 200 bucks a day just to keep pace is nothing to sneeze at, as long as he keeps enjoying it. Hell, even if he doesn't!

I just got mine (#221) and I can't stop smiling! So don't despair, Stav, I'm sure he'll get to everyone eventually. (I ordered it on the 23rd, for reference.)

(It looks kinda generic without the flag, but I was expecting something much worse so I'm pleasantly surprised.)
