I think if I'd done this analysis on the computer I spend more time on, it would probably register my femininity percentage much higher, since that's the one that has icanhascheezburger and KittenWar bookmarked.

I was wondering this too, but it says on the top of the site. Basically, what it does is creates a link to a website. If you've visited the site (or the site's homepage at least), your browser gives the link a CSS pseudo-class of "visited". Since javascript can access the DOM, it can also access these pseudo-classes. This type of functionality (usually done in CSS) is what allows sites to change the color of a link based on whether you've visited it or not.

Interesting thing: the javascript doesn't seem to be able to find items in your history unless you've been to the front page of the sites. While I had gone to Jezebel from the recent link about shoes, it didn't show up until I manually visited http://www.jezebel.com. For that reason, it had me at 67% male until I tried going to the front pages of roamans.com, payless.com, and zappos.com -- all places I'd recently been shopping, but which weren't on the list on my first try. After that it said 100% female.

Woah. Paul Cook figured out a way to reverse engineer (roughly) our browsing history based on the basis of the 'visited' flag for on-site URLs, freely handed over by your browser, and the best use for it is to compare those sites to a crappy adware-derived database tied to sex?

This is an advertiser's wetdream, once they figure out and fix why the script is so slow in IE.

Anyone on any website, can know with 80% certainty, what sites you've also visited since you last cleared your cache+history. They can do that already, to an extent, by using 3rd-party cookies and web-bug 3rd-party ad-images - but largely only on sites already part of their advert network. By blocking 3rd party cookies and blacklist ad-hosting domains, you could block most of their tracking.

Now they can pull up your history virtually at whim, regardless of that site's relationship to the adman, completely silently without anyway to block it that I can see, and alter the adverts you receive based upon that information. Remember the personal advertising in Minority Report? Now it's based on whether you're male, female, middle class, 26-35, a democrat...

Now lets get creepier. Imagine websites knowing what news sites you go to and working out your political affiliation - and changing the actual article you see based on that.

I've seen some scary ass profiling tools in my time, but this is a nasty one, because I can't see any way to block it user-side, without blocking the sites you actually visit in the first place. I'll do some digging, because I'll be very surprised if this isn't already in use by some very unsavoury people.

NoScript hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet? Oh, there, now it has.

I've used noscript. Turning off javascript universally breaks an awful lot of things on an awful lot of sites. But yes, fair point, if you can live with the inconvenience of default off, then noscript will work.

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 86%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 14%
Likelihood of you being GAY is off the friggin' chart. COME ON! Crateandbarrel.com AND containerstore.com?! What, was marthastewart.com totally down for repairs or in prison or something?!

I don't like this test. It has attitude.

I'm female... but I think reading io9 makes me seem like less of woman.

It didn't get my gender (23% Email Harvesting Bot, wtf?), but kudos for estimating that my profession is one of "Researcher into Human Sexuality, and also Midgets".

EPIC FAIL.

Oo, do you think it might be based on gender stereotypes?

(This is a work computer, with the vast majority of history being local intranet sites)

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 38%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 62%

It disregards intranet sites, so this is based entirely on Metafilter, Newegg, Google and two bank sites, which is my whole history for today.

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 40%

Apparently girls don't go to geeks.com (2.33) or pricewatch.com (2.77! girls don't do price comparisons?) but do pay their credit card bills (capitalone.com 0.75, orchardbank.com 0.64, and creditonebank.com 0.77). Ten out of 21 sites it found for me were >=1:1, but those two first ones skewed the numbers enough to knock me down to just 40%.
