VerveFilter: The Verve in Turmoil After Bust-Up on Stage in Osaka The Verve's future is yet again thrown into turmoil after (an apparent onstage squabble) at the Osaka Summer Sonic festival which resulted in guitarist Nick McCabe allegedly being admitted to hospital It is unsure whether or not McCabe will rejoin the Verve to perform at an upcoming festival in the UK.

McCabe traveled back to the UK on a different plane than his bandmates. Audience members [said] that Richard Ashcroft smashed his guitar at the end of 'Lucky Man' in frustration at a bad gig. During 'Bittersweet Symphony', McCabe decided to respond by playing a right old racket all the way through causing Ashcroft to leave the stage kicking a guitar stand over on his way. Sez one YouTube commenter: Maybe Mccabe is fed up playing the same standard Urban Hymnes/ Bon Jovi set. McCabe has left the band once or twice before.

See, if you were a real Verve fan you would have used “A Storm in Heaven” as a title.

He probably thought he was joining the OASIS reunion tour and got upset when he realized his mistake.

Wait until Mick Jagger shows up, insists they're stealing the Stones' schtick, and scampers off with all their tour receipts.

being in a band is like dating 3 people at once.

The Verve reunion is the only thing keeping Richard Ashcroft from putting out more of his melodramatic solo records. For God's sake boys, please keep it together.

"A Storm in Heaven" blew my mind during my pothead days, and, interestingly enough, I was living on the north coast of Japan during a cold, miserable winter when "A Northern Soul". We played "Lucky Man" at my wedding, but, boy has this band been a disappointment. So much wasted potential.

According to the NME, no it's not.

Pff, I was so disappointed reading that article, from the FPP text you made it sound like he went to the hospital due to injuries suffered during the 'dustup'

Whoops, I suppose it does read that way, although, now that you mention it, perhaps there was some sort of roughhousing that resulted in a trip to the hospital. It would also explain why McCabe went back alone to the UK.

More like 2 people. The bass player and the drummer don't actually count as whole people.

Huh. Not living in Britain, I suppose, I never heard anything about the reunion, so this is sort of like telling me Cito Gaston was rehired by the Blue Jays.

I, too, was expected a more interesting "dustup." Violence, VIOLENCE!

No more guitar smashing please. There are people n Africa who don't even own a guitar, and people walk around smashing them like they grow on trees.

That poor drummer.

Jeez, why don't the other three just replace Ashcroft already? He's mediocre at best and causes a shitstorm of drama wherever he goes: all true fans know that Nick McCabe is The Verve in a very big way.

I used to love that Photograph song.

I'm way more into the Verve Pipe, personally. Can't get enough of "Freshmen."

Back in the nineties, we planned an entire vacation around seeing the Verve at Red Rocks, and drove all the way to Colorado only to have them change the venue at the last minute to some smoke-filled hole in downtown Denver. And the sound sucked. For some reason, I have always blamed Richard Ashcroft's giant ego.

how can you say this band has been a dissapointment? To me that's the same as saying Boston or GnR were disappointments. They were not. They were just bands that put all their best songs on one album instead of spreading them out over 3 or 4.

all their best songs on one album

As long as that one album was 'A Northern Soul' and not 'Urban Hymns', then yes.

The new album is their Fourth... and they are all great imo. As long as the new one still comes out at the end of August I'll have enough Verve-idge to last me through another one of their meltdowns.

A Storm in Heaven AND A Northern Soul are both epic, classic records.
Hell, even Urban Hymns is 2/3 brilliant and 1/3 very good.
Seeing as how they only have 3 records (until later this month when Forth comes out) that's a pretty damn good track record.

I don't think Jonas Brothers have to deal with this shit.

It's just that it's been 15 years since A Storm in Heaven came out. They could have done so much more, and Nick McCabe is a genius. Too bad he's insane.

Lol, thats true.
Yeah I wish they could get/keep it together myself.

Same with (the original) Suede.

I could care less about the Verve beating each other up, but following the link for the lineup at the Osaka Summer Sonic festival yielded finds such as Maximum the Hormone (koi no mega lover is hilarious!) and Zaha torte. So thanks for the links!

KokuRyu - same experience here. i think verve is a huge disappointment, ashcroft and his ego took the band in really the wrong direction. Everything up thru 'A Storm In Heaven' is brilliant and 'A Northern Soul' is 1/2 brilliant. past that, meh, and not really looking forward to the new album at all.

i was lucky enough to see them live at lollapalooza one year, and they were phenomenal.

mccabe truly is a guitar god. actually, i always appreciated simon jones' bass playing as well. really groovy.
