Military equipment drawn as anime girls. Probably SFW, but good luck explaining it to the boss. Wikipedia explains.

My boss is okay with it, but I work for a secret organization of plucky schoolchildren who protect earth using a combo of telekinetic powers and improbably large robots.

There was a line of figurines based on the mecha-musume fetish all of which were loosely based on WWII fighter planes. As a sweetener, some of the figurines included a DVD with an 8 minute animation about the girls, who were from all over the world and supposedly were all members of the 501st Joint Fighter Wing, "Strike Witches".

Last summer it was turned into a full 12-episode anime series, and it was very popular. NSFW

Just to compound the fetishes, not only were all of them mecha-musume, but they were all witches and had animal ears and tails when they were flying. And they were all teenagers. And none of them ever wore pants, so their panties were clearly visible all the time. And there were at least three yuri couples among the group. I figure that Gonzo managed to cram about a dozen fetishes in, all told. Quite an achievement, really, in a perverse sort of way. Amazingly, it was broadcast and it wasn't classified as hentai.

I wish I could find it again; there was a cartoon I saw one time that someone drew of the Battle of the Philippine Sea (aka "The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot") which included a mecha-musume version of USS Enterprise, plus it had a mecha-musume version of the A6M Zero hovering in mid-air with her hands up. Behind her was a mecha-musume F6F Hellcat holding a gun on her. It was really cool, but I didn't save it. Rats.

Leave it to the Japanese to say what we never knew needed to be articulated about the sexualization of weapons...or the weaponification of sex.

PUBLIC NOTICE: Bombing an island-nation with two nuclear bombs not only kills hundreds of thousands but also alters the DNA of all future generations. The Japanese people are now either all secretive superheroes, or their neurons have been permanently re-arranged so as to see possibilities no other nation can ever hope to imagine.

Steven C. - I've never watched the series, but here's a big ol' diagram of what planes the girls were, nationality, and.. well, not quite sure about all the other info listed. Anyone fluent in Japanese feel like translating any of it?

The only question I have been able to formulate seeing as everything about this leaves me flabbergasted is, why does the, ah, Mcdonell Douglas A-1 here carry... a toilet?
Just to up the weirdness beyond comprehension and meaning?

Is this really a question you want to know the answer to?

I get that these are airplane-ladies who combine the goodness of combat aircraft with the different goodness of hot babes. I get it, really.

But can someone please explain to my why Madam Skyraider is holding a crapper?

And, yes, I am brave enough to face whatever the answer is.

Even if it is "Two mechanical aircraft women, one toilet bowl."

Aaaaany day now, you genocidal space aliens. Take your time. No hurry at all.

It's just getting a bit ripe down here, what with the dragons having sex with cars, the furry airplane girls, the ninja-unicorns dressed like sugary off-brand cereals having sex with hypercute pirate-robots dressed like witch-nuns that fight crime with their shitting dick nipples.

Okay, I was more or less down with this until I realized from pyrex's link that each mecha-musume is modeled on a famous pilot who flew that kind of plane. I didn't need to know that those were Chuck Yeager's giant boobs, bunny ears, and/or panties.

Why, Japan, why?

Also, is stuff we produce equally weird to them? And why don't other countries have weird shit like this? Maybe the US and Japan are the only two really media-focused, culturally salient nations, but you'd think other countries and cultures would have their own quirky media phenomenon. I can't think of 'em, though. Just Japan.

~ But can someone please explain to my why Madam Skyraider is holding a crapper?

Because a Skyraider dropped a toilet on the North Vietnamese.

What did you think, it was some sort of weird, sex thing? Pervert.

I always thought this was a problem of the internet and of context. We, the average USian Mefite, have no idea what constitutes normal media context in Japan. Yet are given access to the strangest, oddest, back alleys of Japanese culture via the internet.

It's like if Pink Flamingos came out via Youtube and we all wondered if Americans actually adored drag queens eating dog shit. There is no context, no reference, nothing to put it in some kind of place. Do nice housewives in Tokyo wonder about the panty shots of animated airplane women? Is this odd? unusual? criminal? useless? Typical trash or weirdo pervert stuff? We can't know because we're divorced from the thousand and one factors that create context and a media sense.

God help us if we ever discover an alien civilization.

I for one am glad the Japanese can come out with as weird shit as possible. Makes me wish I lived there. Interesting foreign culture beats our shitty pop culture any day.

I fear more that they look at our culture and judge us as if we were all Sarah Palin.
