Definitely a sign that the end times are upon us.

Also: Simpsons Scenes and their reference movies.

This is awesome. I didn't even realize some of these were movie refs (although sometimes you can tell that it's a ref even if you don't recognize it). In some of them, it almost looks like they traces the original (the psycho hole in the wall scene and the Grinch in particular).

Wow I didn't realize that The Simpsons mirrored so many movies. I think Citizen Kane was the most mentioned and referenced.

No reference to The Prisoner, I know they used rover in at least one episode.

edgeways - the third (possibly second as well) act(s) of this episode are entirely based around the Prisoner.

For some reason it took me forever to realize that this post was not about references in The Simpsons Movie. I kept looking at the blog and going, 'That wasn't in the movie either!'

Huh. I didn't know those cupcakes were stand ins for the Clockwork Orange breasts. Makes perfect sense in hind sight what with the electro-shock conditioning and somehow I'd never twigged in the past. I'll have to find someone who doesn't have the internet and impress them with my new found knowledge next time it's on.

I remember when I finally got around to seeing Cape Fear. I hadn't realized the degree to which the Simpsons episode mirrors the film, almost shot-for-shot at times.

The writers have said that you could recreate "Citizen Kane" and "The Godfather" in their entirety out of Simpsons scenes referencing the films.

Given that I rarely watch Simpsons and haven't seen most of the movies referenced, this is so much more entertaining than I expected it to be. Awesomeness reincarnated.

They missed the scene in the trampoline episode when Marge points out all the kids who have injured themselves on the trampoline, and they're all laid out on the ground for a mile, like the war wounded in "Gone With the Wind".
posted by evilcolonel at 10:09 PM on October 19, 2008

Well, they've missed a lot - given the show has been running for nearly twenty years. But it's a good collection - because at least they pointed out references that I didn't catch.

I think that the scene with Bart & Flanders fishing being based off of Return of the King is probably a bit of a stretch. How do you say D'oh in Spanish?

They missed the references to Requiem for a Dream in the ribwich episode.

Spanish shopkeeper finds Homer Simpson euro

the keywords to google are "hobo nickel"

Some of these seem like a stretch at best. The "drawing mustaches on the wanted posters" gag is probably an extension of the Guy Incognito gag from the series, rather than the writers sitting around desperately wanting to find some way to pay homage to a crappy Leslie Nielsen movie from 10 years ago.

Matching that Clockwork Orange with that cupcake scene was brilliant. Never would've seen it in a million years.

Drawing mustaches on the wanted posters also shows up in The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.

There's a joke among the writers of the Simpsons that if you took every clip that parodied Citizen Cane in the Simpons you would get a scene for scene parody of the movie.
posted by AZNsupermarket at 3:01 PM on October 21, 2008

They missed one that always comes to mind when thinking about Simpson's movie parodies.

It might be in the Who Shot Mr. Burns episode, where Mr. Burns has regained consciousness and is sitting up in his hotel bed. My memory is a little fuzzy, though; I haven't watched the Simpsons in a long time.

Anyway, it's a parody of the scene in A Clockwork Orange where Alex is sitting up in bed and being fed. The way Mr. Burns snaps his mouth open, waiting for another forkful, is identical to what Alex does.

Very subtle.

I think the Simpsons may have inaugurated referencing movies in this way. It's funny, but I'm not sure why.
