Live doom. KFJC in Los Altos Hills, California is streaming live video and audio of Japanese doom gods Corrupted and Oakland's Asunder starting immediately. Requires free download of VLC media player shareware to get the live feed (instructions in first link). Equipment being set up as we speak.

Corrupted are from Osaka, sing in Spanish, don't give interviews, nor allow professional photographs and are known for their crushing, bleak soundscapes and fervent anti-commercialism. They haven't toured the States in years and are currently doing a very limited number of highly anticipated West Coast dates. Check out one of the band's quieter moments or something on the heeeeeavy side.

According to a KJFC staffer, "Not sure who will play first. When Corrupted played here like 8 years ago they played for over 2 hours!!"

If you like doom, this will be the best of the web for the rest of your evening.

Is CY THOTH the host? Even though he's a nice guy, listening to him hurts my brain.

No idea. Honestly I don't even know if I'll even be able to stay up for it, it was supposed to start at 8pm PST but they really only just started loading equipment in. Which is ashamed, because if you're into this kind of music you know how rare a chance it is to see Corrupted play live in the States.

I'm just seeing a still frame peering over some records. When does the show start?
posted by Sticherbeast at 8:59 PM on November 6, 2008

The equipment was just loaded in so there has been movement in the frame. I guess they're saying now that it's going to start in an hour (10 pm PST), which is too late for me, unfortunately. Hopefully somebody can capture it somehow and upload it later.

Ah, so it's not the old game then?

You don't need vlc to stream it, i know winamp can too, probably windows media player too. I'll be waiting.

Still waiting for the CD/DVD set I ordered as a donation, but their Live from Japan program was phenomenal (being in the USA, I listened the following day). Fortunately, DJs often throw in replays of selected tracks of the live performances and on a less frequent basis will replay older interviews and programs in their entirety. This station is awesome, unique and very deserving of every bit of attention and support it gets. -unaffiliated listener.

I have no idea what this doom/corrupted stuff is, but seeing KFJC in the FPP made me nostalgic. I lived in Mountain View from 94-97, and one of my happiest memories is Saturday mornings, sitting in my kitchen, reading the paper, eating Noah's Bagels, drinking Trader Joe's Ultra Roast Bay Blend, and listening to the Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show on KFJC. Even won a few prizes from Robert Emmett.

Ah, memories.

Like dhartung, I initially thought this was some kind of nerdy live-action webcast reenactment of Doom.

Venadium: Doesn't seem like anything is happening just yet

Unless you count the musicians standing around and talking and eating, followed by a setup guy who ushers out the musicians, begins moving in equipment, bends over to fix something and gives the camera a very brief glimpse of ass crack, finishes the setup, does a little jig, leaves and points the camera back at the record shelves. Also, forgot to link to their Live from Japan page.

davidmsc: Ah, memories.

Can't you just stream it? Heck, I imagine you could even stream/record it and listen later if you liked it enough.

Now we get a long, blury closeup of a veritable electronic ass crack (is that an amp?).
posted by christopherious at 9:58 PM on November 6, 2008

Whoah! You can see their faces through the amp! Surreal.
posted by christopherious at 10:00 PM on November 6, 2008

Can you hear anything?

I'm getting shit FPP anxiety, here, I apologize that so far the delivery truck full of win I thought was pulling up has not yet arrived.

I don't even have a video feed. Is that bad?
posted by puke & cry at 10:09 PM on November 6, 2008

Have no fear. The video feed (which is currently working great for me, even though the camera is pointed away from the action) may not remain mute, but even if it does, the audio stream is always up. I have no idea if this is a college radio thing or just a KFJC thing, but every other KFJC interview/event I've listened to was at least slightly delayed. However, their streams have always been solid for me.

It could begin at any moment.
posted by christopherious at 10:11 PM on November 6, 2008

I'm thinking since you're getting a video and I'm not, I must have some problem on my end. Hopefully not.
posted by puke & cry at 10:13 PM on November 6, 2008

Damn, I missed all that stuff. Every time I check back on it the camera is just pointed at some other random object. Also, I can't hear anything. From the video I mean.

Love KFJC--good place to play. Nice to see Corrupted getting some attention, too.

Venadium, just do what I'm doing, stream it on Winamp or whatever, play the video in VLC, and then periodically alt-tab to Fallout 3.
posted by christopherious at 10:18 PM on November 6, 2008

Davidmsc, Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack still streams every Saturday from 9 to noon, and is still worth listening to.
posted by BrotherCaine at 10:24 PM on November 6, 2008 [1 favorite]

I'd be alt-tabbing to Fallout 3 if I could. Unfortunately some bad RAM on my video card means it can't even handle CounterStrike without crapping out.
posted by Venadium at 10:24 PM on November 6, 2008

Yup, it's a problem on my end.

Bands like Corrupted and Asunder, although they are considered the pinnacle of their niches, inspired the joke-doom band D'GUL with me and some friends. We put no effort at all into our music, our drummer had never picked up a stick in her life and we just pointed at her when we wanted her to hit a drum. But because we were tuned low and growled, people dug us. We were a transparent fucking joke, but because doom can't tell stupid from clever, we were embraced.

Screw doom, it's oversaturated. But I do recognize that Corrupted are legends and Asunder are transcendent in their genre.

Band check now, still no audio.

I don't have any audio yet, no.

If Mr. Mustachio is watching this, he must be infuriated by the amount of time it's taking them to set up. But I'm pretty sure he said "fuck it" and went back to watching puppies.

Aaaaaaannnd we're back to looking through the ass end of an amp again.

This thread is pretty funny. Also, I remember the first time I got really high and listened to "Llenandose de gusanos", it was really dark and scary and I was alone in the house and there was a thunderstorm and lightning flashing outside. The singing in Spanish, somewhat less scary.

opening the URL in firefox shows the shoutcast server is down
posted by futureproof at 12:21 AM on November 7, 2008

Unless there's some huge issue at play, I'm sure their video streaming is just down, and/or it's because the musicians are still taking their time. At 12:05 local the video feed was showing a very active (but silent) warmup session, and seven minutes in the video went dead. Ten minutes later, the DJ said between tracks, "It's loud here...Should be happening shortly." I, however, must get up pretty early. Hope it's a good show for the rest of you!

I took off the :8020 part and it connected without asking for a password, and I can hear the DJ, who is saying that Corrupted is coming up.

Funny to see Corrupted and Asunder on here! They played a great show in Portland the other night, at the Satyricon. Couldn't see a damn thing, due to smoke machine excess, but it sounded great. Nothin' like some doom metal to put a grin on my face.

I emailed the KFJC netcast guy about the password thing:
I'm trying to listen to Corrupted, but VLC keeps asking for a password for realm(null)

Yes, sorry, this is an annoying "feature" of VLC for video streams, it does this if the stream is not running. We are trying to figure out a way of posting a graphic of some sort, so at least there's *something* to connect to while we're setting things up at our end.

As for the Corrupted live mic, I'm not sure it happened ... I fell asleep waiting! I'm not sure what the problem was, I know they got lost on the way to the station but there must have been some technical issues too.

Note that, regardless of what may be happening with the livecam feed, our regular netcast is always available for audio.

Further followup:
Turns out the band played from 2am for about an hour and a half ... I'm told it was both corrupted and asunder playing together: 5 guitars, 2 basses, 1 huge drum set, 2 singers.

Also, corrupted don't like being photographed or filmed, so we turned the webcam off ... it was an audio-only live mic. I hear it was pretty awesome so I *really* hope we'll be rebroadcasting it sometime, but it may have to wait till after the fundraiser.

This just in (thanks to KFJC DJ Cy Thoth): The Nov. 6 Corrupted and Asunder collaboration will be rebroadcast on Tuesday, November 18 from 5:30-6:00 local by KFJC DJ Rowan Rowan Hawthorne. See schedule (when it gets updated for next week) just in case. I'm not even particularly fond of the genre (although it's all right), just love the station and happened to hear the announcement in passing.
