The Rule of Law Complex? I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Wait'll the cholera crops up. Or possibly TB. That'll be a hoot.

wish this was being posted a couple of days from now when the wretched holiday is past; this post deserves a little attention.

i've been fretting over the withdrawal as much as i was upset at the onslaught of our government's invasion of iraq. this morning i was walking to work trying to figure out if i was mister obama how would i deal with the simultaneous impulse to get the hell out of there and the overwhelming desire to keep the joint from imploding now that we've destroyed any form of infrastructure that could have kept the joint upright.

prisons are always a complex issue and in my mind should always a be a last ditch allocation for those we deem outside the 'law.' any other measure to serve a notion of justice and thus rehabilitation should be considered and implemented first before forced internment. especially when you can't guarantee the safety and sanity of those who are deployed there.

our own systems are never fully safe from the power of bigotry and presumptive rhetoric ("they're all bad guys! make 'em pay!") and we have some measure of what i like to think of as a civilized calm about the states. but any one who looks not very hard at our prison complex(ities) will swiftly realize what a mockery they are of our claims toward being a civilized nation. how much harder must it be for a nation that perhaps only exists in the realm of the imaginary? it's probably going to turn into a mumia abu jamal production engine.
