Don't make phone calls in Vegas. The Mob is listening. Whores! Wiretapping! Kevin Mitnick! Men nicknamed 'Aspirins' with electric drills! And more, courtesy of The Register. How widespread is this kind of telco infiltration? Should we trust any phone calls, anywhere?

If you go look at the actual original source of the article, it becomes clear that they're a bunch of raving paranoids. The author of this piece also has a review of a movie about Kevin Mitnick which makes clear the author's bias. Also note that Mitnick himself is a regular writer for this rag.

In other words, consider the source. (By the way, why didn't this dude in Vegas get a couple of friends to go stay a night at a couple of the big hotels and try some test calls?)

I could hardly follow the logic. It sounds like a rough-cut of Hackmans "The Conversation". Right, test other lines, call in a pro. Nicky Ears from detriot needs some work.

Poulsen served five years for phone hacking from 1991 to 1996. From my experience reading his work on Wired and ZDNet, he's a pretty good reporter on these subjects. This piece does a great job of explaining the claims, which the Nevada Public Utility Commission will be investigating in public hearings this September. Are they paranoid too?

You know, a five year prison term is not exactly what you'd call credentials for credibility.

As to the NV PUC, what they're doing is shutting up a loudmouth. They'll investigate -- and find that there's nothing going on.

Gee, I dunno, if someone can phreak well enough to get the Feds on his case, maybe he knows what he's talking about when it comes to breaking telco security.

Actually, if he phreaked well, he wouldn't have been caught.
