Hey! That timer is really neat!
Does it restart every time?
Ah, no it doesn't.
I notice the timestamp gets updated. I take it that it's by design.
Hey, does that mean if I leave my comment alone while other people futz around with theirs mine will move up in the order-of-comments? In theory, then, a response could come before the comment responded to. Cause and effect is no more! There is no first cause! God is dead!

It even works when you browse to a different page! That's pretty cool.
I think, actually, that maybe the time limit is too long? In a heated thread, a lot can happen in three minutes.

It might be entertaining to see how this affects the medium though.

I really think this is a terrible decent idea assuming you reduce it to a minute or less for the whole kaboodle, because people should really be able to correct a few spelling mistakes in the same amount of time it took me to strike out my original comment, add the word decent, and then edit again to add this long-ass piece of additional text, amirite?

Well, you have to leave enough time for the poster to notice the error in the first place. And while typos and missing words are corrected easily enough, something like a broken or forgotten link may take a little more time to set right.

I think I will become a rock star along the vein of Paul McCartney. Sure, critics might roll their eyes at his efforts but people like them. Entertaining people is really what it's all about - after all, that's how you make bank. Some who know me may have a good belly laugh at my idea, but that's their problem. Sure, I have a hard time remembering lyrics but that's why my signature sound will be Death Metal Do Wop. This way I never forget the chorus, why, I'm vocally improvising! I will concede that I may have some difficulty singing in the same key as my band, perhaps being a tone or semi-tone off, but the dissonance will start a new wave in Death Metal, or is that a Nü Wave?
My ability to hit certain notes may be suspect, or, more accurately, non-existent, but that's why autotuners were invented. In fact, perhaps it's best if I sing in a monotone drone and use midi sequencing to bend my vocals to the proper tune.
In the end though, it's all about the fans. The fans and their disposable income. And the groupies, I can't forget the groupies. I'd be remiss to mention the people at the shipyards, especially U.S. Submarine and the excellent work they'll do on my submersible yacht. I'll tip my glass to the indigenous people who's islands I shall conquer by virtue of my weapon systems provided by Lockheed Martin. Fans, all of them, and I thank you.

The Rat sculled smartly across and made fast. Then he held up his forepaw as the Mole stepped gingerly down. `Lean on that!' he said. `Now then, step lively!' and the Mole to his surprise and rapture found himself actually seated in the stern of a real boat.
`This has been a wonderful day!' said he, as the Rat shoved off and took to the sculls again. `Do you know, I`ve never been in a boat before in all my life.'
`What?' cried the Rat, open-mouthed: `Never been in a--you never--well I--what have you been doing, then?'
`Is it so nice as all that?' asked the Mole shyly, though he was quite prepared to believe it as he leant back in his seat and surveyed the cushions, the oars, the rowlocks, and all the fascinating fittings, and felt the boat sway lightly under him.
`Nice? It's the ONLY thing,' said the Water Rat solemnly, as he leant forward for his stroke. `Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING--absolute nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing,' he went on dreamily: `messing--about--in--boats; messing----'
`Look ahead, Rat!' cried the Mole suddenly.
It was too late. The boat struck the bank full tilt. The dreamer, the joyous oarsman, lay on his back at the bottom of the boat, his heels in the air.
`--about in boats--or WITH boats,' the Rat went on composedly, picking himself up with a pleasant laugh. `In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not. Look here! If you've really nothing else on hand this morning, supposing we drop down the river together, and have a long day of it?'

Love the idea.
Edited to add, there should remain a link on here that says "item edited" or something, that you can click to see the original comment. Keeps everyone honest. Makes PB work harder.
I'm a fan!
Double edit for spelling. This message would not be necessary with the "this has been edited" doo dad.

This is where I type a really long response but without realizing it, cut it up horribly in editing right before I pull the trigger and imply something really heinous as a result.
And this is where I fix the typo.
Damn, having that clock ticking away at the top of the page really makes this seem like a more high-stakes activity than it normally is... very MacGyveresque.
Part of me wants to wait until it's down to around 0:02 or so before I click "Save" just so I can prevent the world from exploding.

What should happen when a comment is edited after receiving favorites?
1) Favorites are cleared, with or without a notification to favoriters so they can reapply if they still deem the comment worthy.
2) Favorites are retained, with or without a notification to favoriters so they revoke if they want to.
3) The comment is locked from editing immediately upon being favorited, so that typos and miswordings are preserved for posterity if they are funny enough.
I like 3.
[edit] I think the default we wound up with is option 2, no notification. This allows people to make others appear to endorse things they do not actually endorse.
[edit] yep, i was right.

Your comment appears to be blank. Please go back, edit your comment, and submit again.
perhaps you should just disable the save changes button when the comment is blank as you do for posting comments?

Timer still starting at 2:52.
Yeah, we could factor in the redirect and page load time for the timer, but we don't know how long that will take, exactly. It's about :08 - :10 fairly consistently, but that changes. It depends on connection speed, length of the thread, and general MeFi performance at the moment. The only concrete time we have to work from is the time the comment hits the database and we go with three minutes from that time.
