Don't you get both showcases if you get within a hundred dollars or something? Because I swear I've seen that a handful of times.

and, um, a pony for anonymous posts in the blue, please and thanks.

(But yeah, good point in the title. I wonder if it would have been so popular if they called it The Price is Close Enough.)

Also, I wasn't aware this show was still on the air. Where did the old guy that talked about getting cats and dogs fixed go?

Drew Carey looks like he's only doing the show to work off a debt to the mob. I've never understood him as the choice to replace Bob Barker.

I want to go on record here and say that The Price is Right is the greatest game show of all time, in perpetuity and throughout the universe.

My love of this show began in the womb, as my mother went into labor during the showcase showdown. Granted, she was just watching on TV, but that has to count for something.

Watching the video in rokusan's link generated feelings of pure joy for me. I was on the verge of tears, I was so happy.

Bob Barker would have never let that shit happen.

I kinda enjoyed, in a weird WTF way, the video of the announcer announcing the prizes of the Showcase Showdown via Barenaked Ladies lyrics.

Some friends and I had drinks at the Four Seasons with Drew Carey before a U.S.-England soccer match in Chicago a few years back. He was probably the funniest person I've ever met. Certainly the richest. A member of our party tried to pick up the bar tab, and Drew said, "Are you going to leave a $200 tip?" So we let him pay.

I actually like Drew okay as a replacement for Bob Barker. My dad loves the show, so I've watched it a few times... he's really not as apathetic as he looks in this video.

Whose showcase is it anyway? After seeing the unbridled excitement oozing from Drew Carey, I am going to start tivo'ing this show every day. I can't miss a second...
posted by Chuffy at 4:34 PM on December 16, 2008

Wikipedia cites this to explain Drew's reaction:
Also, Willy said there was a 45-minute stopdown between bidding & reveal - because the entire staff felt that way, too, but they couldn't re-do the SCs or anything like that. While I, again, absolutely agree Drew SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST feigned joy if he was feeling it was illegitimate, I honestly think this is a plausible theory that's going to prove itself true - not cheating, but suspicions of it and a definite person who knew these prices by heart.
posted by mullacc at 4:43 PM on December 16, 2008

Aww, I guess I probably would have suspected that guy of cheating, too, but seriously? He's a comedic actor, and he can't feign a little joy?

And thanks, rokusan, for posting that video. I actually started clapping as I watched, and definitely teared up a bit. Plus, Drew's disbelieving joy more than made up for the complete flatness of his response in the first video.
posted by LiliaNic at 4:58 PM on December 16, 2008

Sorry, to be clear, the initial "he" in my previous response referred to Drew Carey. I don't know what the showcase winner guy does for a living, but I suspect it involves catalogs and memorization.
posted by LiliaNic at 5:00 PM on December 16, 2008 [1 favorite]

Yes, Durn, the "both showcases" go to anybody whose guess is within $100, which is why hardly anybody ever tries to get the last two digits exact, most often rounding by multiples of $50 or $25. Drew seemed amused by the bid, as he often reacts to "wacky" contestant behavior with something just short of derision. It actually enhances the enjoyment of the show for some (including me) that the host doesn't deny that he knows when you're making a fool of yourself. But his underwhelmed reaction did not serve him well at a moment that was sure to be seen by more non-regular viewers than any other this year. I've seen him come back from a commercial break with a total lack of enthusiasm before, and a long delay in the taping makes sense as an explanation - after all, Drew Carey is not much of an actor. I usually only watch Price Is Right when visiting my dad, for whom it is one of the few game shows he tolerates and a lot better than the 'women's talk shows' and fake courtroom shows on the other channels; if somebody counter-programmed the time slot with reruns of Carey's old sitcom, Price would lose one regular viewer for sure.
posted by wendell at 5:06 PM on December 16, 2008

Given this and the kid that won everything on his birthday, I think it's some fake marketing done by the Price Is Right to remind people they still exist and everyone should watch it. I mean, you give two dudes 100k worth of junk and the stories show up everywhere on the web for a few weeks -- that's got to be worth something.

I bet that nets a ratings and ad sales bump worth more than the 100k of free promotional crap they gave away anyway.

Whoa, why isn't this post about golden-road.net? A forum dedicated to the price is right (where they call it TPiR) and they post daily show recaps? Genious!

posted by piratebowling at 5:30 PM on December 16, 2008 [1 favorite]

Another theory I've read is that Carey read out the contestant's bid again by mistake when announcing the price. But upon reflection, that theory doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Plus, golden-road.net is CRAZY knowledgeable about this stuff, so they immediately win. (Seriously, read some of the awesome threads about the music packages they used for the show. Epic.)
posted by chrominance at 6:02 PM on December 16, 2008

I have a weak spot for this trashy piece of Americana if only because it's what I would always watch on TV when there was a "teacher's day off" at school. We had like three channels and it was either game shows or soap operas.

I also ate cereal. A lot of cereal.

I've been suspicious of The Price is Right ever since Drew Carey started hosting. I remember seeing a few episodes in a row right after he started hosting where everyone who got on stage won. I've only watched a few episodes since then, but it seems like the win percentage is much higher than when Bob Barker was host.

I'm a bit speechless with the amount of time that is spent on golden-road.net ..

I'm a bit confused why Drew didn't act more surprised and empathetic, even if there was a 45 minute break between the showcase showdown prizes and the revealing of the price.
Drew acted like he was krusty the clown, show as little emotion as he had to.

If I understand correctly, this guy was in the audience and yelled out the correct showcase price. Did that audience guy have those prices memorized ?
posted by fizzix at 6:55 PM on December 16, 2008

Looking at that Golden Road forum, it seems the reason the guy got the exact value is because he listened to their forum member Ted who was at the taping and had memorised the prices of the items for fun. He worked it out, shouted it out, the contestant listened to him and got it bang on. Which is quite amazing in itself, frankly.

I used to cross my fingers that this would happen during every Showcase Showdown I had the pleasure to watch during days home sick from school. I cannot believe that when it finally happened again it was post-Bob Barker's retirement.

Also, didn't they change the double showcase win to be for bids within $250 of the actual retail price because within $100 was too damn hard? I was sure that they had.

And to think I was absolutely sure that woman had overbid...
