Oops, my mistake, guess I was thinking Diet Pepsi came out when Diet Coke did. But aspartame wasn't approved for use in soda until '83 in any case, so he must have been hopped up on saccharine.

No, before Aspartame was used, another artifical sweetener called Saccharin was used. They used to have to print warnings about cancer on cans of pop because of that stuff, but then it turned out not to cause cancer.
