Robert Mulligan, the director of To Kill a Mockingbird, has passed away.

He also directed the feature film debuts of Neil Patrick Harris (Clara's Heart) and Reese Witherspoon (in his final film, The Man in the Moon).

Damn. To Kill a Mockingbird was on TV last night - I hadn't seen in it years, and had forgotten what a great film it was. A lot of that goes to Gregory Peck, but the direction & cinematography is brilliant too.

Mulligan was nominated for Best Director for To Kill a Mockingbird but - understandably - lost to David Lean for Lawrence of Arabia. Mockingbird is a beautifully composed film, as the still from the first link shows.

"Mockingbird" was one of those motion pictures you never forget. "Love with the Proper Stranger" and "Summer of '42" had their moments, too.

"The Other" was the first movie I ever remembering watching start to finish. It left a lifetime impression on me. It hit a chord with me that has lasted a lifetime. Rest in Peace, my friend.

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.
