Rev. Richard John Neuhaus is dead. The founder and editor of the Catholic journal First Things, (I am a subscriber), and an inveterate gossip.
Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine,
cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
quia pius es.
Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine;
et lux perpetua luceat eis ;
cum Sanctis tuis in aeternum,
quia pius es.

I'm a subscriber as well, mourning the loss. While I enjoy all of FT, the best part has almost always been his column. I didn't always agree with him theologically or politically but he was an amazing writer, a fantastically witty man, and very fun to have as either an ally or opponent.

Neuhaus came to speak at my (extremely liberal) college a few years ago, on a cold, crisp winter day. As he came up to podium to begin his speech, a freak peal of thunder roared through the room as if to announce his presence on our delightfully hedonistic campus. His was quite the presence, and in terms of his wit and intellectual engagement, he was a big step above other Christian conservatives.

From Michael Sean Winters:
I remember the first time Father Neuhaus attacked me in print: I felt on top of the world. For a left-of-center person like me, being attacked by Father Neuhaus was a badge of honor. To gain the notice of someone with whom you disagree is much more flattering than to gain the praise of a mentor or an acolyte.posted by l33tpolicywonk at 2:16 PM on January 8, 2009
What a loss. I could never understand how he managed to do so much, and so cleverly.

I just got the most recent (Feb) issue of First Things and it looks to have his final column in it, which is sad (especially the final few paragraphs).
