Of course that site would bring this up in my first four results...

Metafilter-dotted. was cool for the three images that I did get to see....

Too bad there are no comments, though I guess they'd all be pretty much the same. "Why do black bears ride horses? Duh, because their bikes are in the shop!"

Huh, now it's back. And there are comments. Weird. Disregard my prior comment, I guess.

No, I am going to disregard your latter comment z.

It would work much better if the frontpage showed one big image and a random button.

Explain This Image

419 scammer getting owned by trolls, a demonstration of proper trigger discipline while eating cookies in the shower, that crazy mushroom horse-head guy with a cat on a pier, a man holding a birdhouse in his underwear and socks, inflatable rubber bondage suit with holes for eyes and mouth, that fat guy with the tear in his pants trying to do kung-fu against the laws of gravity, some weirdo in a balloon, Burning Man, more 419 scammers getting owned, Coca-Cola fan club, naked Klingon, hillbilly birthday party after they start letting the kids take shots of SoCo, drag queen motorcycle stunt person doing a walk through before jumping over fire in ruby slippers...

...I don't need to explain those images. Those images exist because digital cameras come in breakfast cereal now and everyone has one and humanity is so deeply weird few will ever bother to really look it in the eye and say hello.

jonmc, it's some kind of British thing. Their lousy packaged foods metaphors are invading our language, destroying its purity, polluting its essence.

I always thought the "on the tin" expression came from tobacco tins.

And not sure why DU says it does the opposite. Shows you strange images, people explain them. Pretty straight forward.

And yes, I am an American, assuming you consider Iowa to be part of the US. Most do.

"It does exactly what it says on the tin" comes from an advert on British tv for Ronseal Wood Stain or some similar Ronseal product. A very stern looking man said it, and it caught on pretty quickly.

Now nobody doubts that wood stain stains wood.

Not in the ones I looked at, they didn't. Unless that really is the Flying Cat Deli.

I noticed they have other sites like "SFWPorn" which seem to use the exact same web design. I hate to be cynical because some of the pictures are just something else, but I'm getting really pissed off how sites like this one steal images and slap their watermark on them in a cynical effort to gather web hits.

It's such a fucking shame the internet's all about the money.

It makes you want to rip off a bunch of pics from Flickr with CC licenses and put your own Google ads on them.
posted by smackfu at 11:20 AM on January 20, 2009

To the people not seeing the explanations, the pics allow you to create your own. Some have them, some don't. Explain away, or go to a new pic.

I guess when I wrote "does what it says on the tin" I should have written directions as well. I didn't think it would be this challenging to so many.

Metafilter: "on the tin"
Digg: "title says it all"

Could we just shorten it to "." if you've nothing to add?

Good idea, poor execution. I was hoping for a Wiki-style, definitive explanation of memes. All I see is YouTube-caliber comments. Encyclopedia Dramatica is a good place for getting the history on 4chan memes, if you're into that sort of thing.
