For those unsure how far they got: the base system explained.

This post was deleted for the following reason: I think we're into the point of XKCD and Metafilter's relationship where "new, somewhat more elaborate than usual comic!" doesn't generally cut it as a post. -- cortex

I always preferred using the (n. american) football system. Specifically about how someone took 10 yards and got a first down.

One of Munroe's better basic ideas but undermined by nonseqiturish and WTF? side jokes. Integrating the Abbott & Costello "Who's On First" routine might have helped this, but generally, xkcd is gaining speed and the shark is coming into view...

Please don't tell me I'm the only person that assumed this was going to be a strip about base-10 vs base-16 vs base-2, like this completely awesome one about height on a logarithmic scale..

I'm not the only one, right? Please? Nerds, represent?

I did, and I was wondering why the link was dimmed. Like, when did I look at something about number systems?

Whenever I see xkcd linked to on MetaFilter, these two comics from pictures for sad children float through my mind.

Not saying I agree or disagree with Mr. Cambell, but I feel guilty about reading both comics. Like I'm cheating or something.

For what it's worth, the binary in the bottom-right of the cartoon is the binary of the words "base 2" in ASCII.

Does anybody actually use the 'base' euphemisms anymore. Even when I was in high school in the late 1980's they already seemed kind of quaint.

The worst part about this post is that that was last Friday's comic. If you were going to post a single link XKCD, you could have at least posted it when it went up.

I always imagine every single stickperson from xkcd to be a really thin, kinda pale, lank-haired geek-and-proud-of-it who seems really witty and sweet at first, but then they start telling you about all their physics dissertations and Babylon 5 fanfic as if you'd actually understand or enjoy them, and then they start talking openly about their sex lives and how you too should really be into BDSM because you'd totally like it (winkwink), and I can't help but think, I'm really happy for you and all, but you're starting to make me feel a little uncomfortable and yeah I really have to get going.

Which is why I don't read it anymore. That and I never remember whether the k or the c comes first and I don't feel like remembering.

Maybe I am not checking the front page enough, but I hadn't seen an XKCD here in awhile.
However, this post would have been (a lot) better with some other links, maybe to some more takes on this joke and perhaps something on the origin of the base system (why do we even equate bases & home runs with making out and having sex?)

As is, it is mediocre at best.
posted by silkygreenbelly at 3:01 PM on February 11, 2009

You haven't seen XKCD here in a while because links to individual strips of webcomics get deleted, quite properly. As I said the last time this happened, everyone who cares has already read it.

Whelk, I'm a fan of rugby league metaphors too. I can't count the number of times mates and I have been discussing somebody or other's bedroom antics with questions like:
Did you collapse the scrum?
Did she show the ball and skip past the fullback?
Did you do any decent running out of dummy half?
Did she get five in the sin bin for that ugly high contact?
Did you turnover after the fifth tackle?
Did she kick a forty twenty? DID SHE KICK A FORTY F*&KING TWENTY?

I think every week there should be a single post with a link to what's new on:

  • The Onion
  • XKCD
  • The Big Picture
  • BBC News (of the weird)

It would be my favourite post, and I would favourite it SO HARD.

US Translation: I would also favorite it.

Actually, these days kids don't have to ask 'what base' since the whole event is either webcammed from the back of the car and posted via cellphone to their myspace pages within minutes of the boobie-grab attempt.

Get off my lawn, you baseheads.

we do not need an update every time xkcd says something funny.

    1. Why not just bifurcate? Create a separate Mefi frontpage, an "unfiltered" Filter, that serves as an outlet for the single-link tv, and all the other internet sugar that people want to slurp up and talk about here (rather than at reddit), but don't want cluttering the site proper.

    2. Then, add pictures of hawkish, acute American Apparel models, flashing their glittery poncewear and executing eyerolls with more degrees than Tony Hawk.

    3. Then just come on over and put a Webley Mk VI to my head.

I prefer to use the 'bass' analogy, as in like, "We started making-out and she touched my Geddy", "The two of us got Fleaky', and "Dude I got all up in that chick's Claypool".
