We're live again.

We're live again. After an eventless trip across the United States, MetaFilter is now happily living again. I was trying to come up with a name for my apartment, now that MetaFilter lives here -- Pyra East? MetaBroadway? I'm not creative right now.

Thanks for the great job, Jason. Everyone go read the wonderful Queso as a slight thank you for all of his hard work.

I read Queso. It was fantastic. I think I'm going to go steal all his links for my blog now. In a way, it might not be such a great thing that we're up so quickly, what with that New York Times Kaycee article and all.

Metapad.

"Shouldn't this be in MetaTalk?", he said with a sly grin. He then raised a beer in honor of both Jason and Matt.

Hijinx -- the metatalk.metafilter.com DNS changes haven't propagated yet, at least not to this end of the world.
posted by delfuego at 10:24 AM on May 31, 2001

Back in the early days of the internet, we used to have to propagate using nothing but shovels and hoes!

(my comment was stated with a sly grin)

Just so nobody thinks I was using a ping tool to see when Metafilter was back up. I really, really wasn't -- I just got back from lunch, logged on, and checked for the hell of it, and there it was.

Anil was definitely using a ping tool, the tool.

Here's what I posted earlier on the Kaycee forum in reference to the news that MeFi was heading east:

"Now, Metafilter is having the time of its life, drinking tiny little bottles of scotch, goosing stews, and probably screwing a cute little iBook in the bathroom, as it takes a cross-country plane trip to Noo Yawk and the beneficent arms of Doctor Jason Levine1, webmeister-legal-eagle-medico-extraordinaire, a/k/a http://q.queso.com, who has bandwidth to spare. All hail Q!"

Q is, of course, for those not of keen eye, our own delfuego. Metafuego? Gotta get you in there somewhere.

This is particularly sweet and fitting, since BlogYou reviewed Queso by saying "Most links appear to be pulled directly from Metafilter"! Honestly, I've been reading Jason for a while now, and that only happens when he's on a heavy rotation in his residency.

1 Said with a skeptical swagger, like Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive.

This just plain and simply rocks! :)
Thanks Jason!

Dan, I hurt with laughter. You da man.

And, in all fairness, Anil had fair warning -- he and I were actively instant-messaging the whole time the server was being reanimated. Don't feel badly... :)

On MetaFilter, no one knows you're the bandwidth provider.

Since MT doesn't seem to be working for me, I'd like to report a strange glitch. When I try to log in with Opera 5 for the Mac, I'm repeatedly thrown back to the login page. This doesn't seem to happen with any other browser.

Maybe it's just Opera, but dangit, it's the fastest browser for the Mac available and I'm hooked!
posted by likorish at 2:13 PM on May 31, 2001

Login on MeFi is accomplished using cookies. Check your cookie management settings in Opera. If they seem to be oll korrect, report it as a bug to Opera Software -- after all, the browser is a beta release and probably contains bugs.
posted by kindall at 2:15 PM on May 31, 2001

The Mac Opera alphas have almost no cookie support. But they just released the first beta yesterday, so you might want to d/l that and see if it works.

Wow. This is a way faster connection than before.
posted by ParisParamus at 2:34 PM on May 31, 2001

Faster than a speeding pullet.

Jason: what was the manner of the MeFi box's transfer from coast to coast? FedEx overnight air? smuggled aboard in carry-on? Pony Express?

Holgate: Knowing the dedication & spirit of Jason & the rest of the MeFi community, I'd wager it was some sort of a "Hands Across America" gig, with a nationwide bucket-brigade handing the server from one person to the next, all the way to NYC.
