When playing Broken Telephone as a child, I could always tell which kids changed it into something "funny" on purpose and I hated them for ruining the game.
I'm over it now.

I was going to say "No I don't, Joey Michaels" but then I think I might be wrong. (I'm LogopolisMike there) Of course, all my other drawings suck. I wish I could choose just to guess text but that would, I suppose, be lame.

Who are these freaks who can draw near perfect representations of animated characters with sub-MS Paint technology? And by "freaks" I mean skilled artisans.

Telephone Pictionary (as I usually call it) is the world's best party game. It requires nothing more than a stack of paper and pens, and it is hysterically funny--I can't think of any other game that's resulted in as much tear-inducing, side-splitting laughter. It requires no skill. Indeed, it rewards poor drawings. Optimal number of people is between 4 and 10, I think; you can do it with more, but it gets a bit unwieldy.

ORthey mentioned not seeing anything indicating an invitation, so I'd like to know if anyone has. I may have gotten something wrong.

Or maybe it's secret by design? Like, games you're invited to appear just as any other game, and everyone is notified when it's done? Just speculating here.

There is definitely something odd going on. I think some of the games never get completed but just evaporate for some reason. Counting last night, I've participated in 17 games, yet only 8 of them show up as finished. I can't find out any information on the site as to why that might be. For example one game I started this morning (Guitar plays tennis with saxophone) at 10:30 has had three hours to complete the 11 entries, yet it never showed up as completed. Could there be a moderator yanking games for some reason?

This is fun.

I gotta get in on these MeFite games. If I click join game, will it automatically pipe me into private games to which I've been invited? I don't think so, but I also don't see invites anywhere.

Maybe it does it by turn and it only invites you when it's your go—with a large game, I could see that taking a while. I wish this was better organized/more clear.

I guess I'll just play whatever it gives me for now.
posted by defenestration at 11:02 AM on March 14, 2009

SLoG, I wonder if it has to do with people using the "skip" function? So certain prompts/images might get passed over multiple times in a row by different users, thus extending the length of the game. And I guess the turn limit could also extend that time period. According to the site blog it looks like it's just the owner doing the modding right now. He talks about trolling, but doesn't say whether he's been deleting games because of it. For my part I've played 39 games, and all but 7 have been completed, and I received emails for all the completions.

I've started a new game, set to 25 rounds, and added all the people on MStPT's list, plus those who commented after his comment (on preview: but before SLoG's comment. Sorry guys!) This game is crazy addictive.

On preview, I guess if a private game has a turn limit that is equal or more to the number of players continue until everyone has had a turn. Which means that a private game could stretch out for much longer periods of time, or even just die. Since you're dependent on the next person in your group getting the email and responding in a timely fashion. I am I understanding this correctly? Or does everyone in the private group all receive the initial email invite?

I have yet to receive an invite, so I don't think they send out an initial email invite.

Also, I noticed the "tree" on a couple completed games as well, though it hasn't popped up in any of mine (yet). There has been at least one genuinely entertaining game response to the trolling though.

Every picture, no matter what was drawn, was described as "Tree".

Oh. That is the very definition of unimaginative trolling!

Would any mefites be interested in a real (well, real-er) game of Eat Poop You Cat? People could make pictures in paint or photoshop or scan in a paper-pencil drawing. It would take longer, but would also be mightily awesome. I'd be willing to orchestrate the thing if enough people are up for it.

I'm down bookish. Just MeMail me if you get it set up. I do sort of like the time limit, though. I find the obstruction makes the game interesting.

If more time and thought goes into the drawings, I think the captions should have more to them as well. Perhaps instead of captions people could write very short stories (or small parts of a larger story), and the drawings could be illustrations.
posted by defenestration at 11:17 AM on March 14, 2009

Thanks Bookish, but I am out-- having better tools would just underscore how dreadful my drawings are, besides I really do need to accomplish something today.
posted by Secret Life of Gravy at 11:19 AM on March 14, 2009

That sounds like fun, bookish. I'm interested, and I kinda like the idea of it being it more thought-out and eleborate. But at the same time, the more skillful a drawing is, the more recognizable it is to the next player. Which would take a lot of the fun out the game I think, since we could just wind up going around in circles. There would be less opportunity for the game to evolve off in funnier and stranger ways.

I agree that sticking with some sort of deadline/timelimit would be good though. For my procrastination-prone own sake, at least.

I'm kimothy there (and here, obviously) if anyone's still making lists...

I'd love to join in on some MeFi private games. Username is msvader.

I've participated in few, and I can't figure out how I've gotten a -2 rating already, after just one or two drawings. I'm not THAT bad. Sheesh...

BTW, thanks for posting this. I've loved EPYC since the first time I played it and this is a nifty online version—the best I've seen thus far.

Fun fun fun.

I'm a huge fan of the playable on Facebook version.

I'm getting loads of completed games, but the two I started haven't finished yet. I'm recognizing some mefites from some of the completed games, though!

psho: have you received any invites to private games yet?

BTW, thanks for posting this.

You're welcome! I'm more than happy to facilitate time wasting!

I can't believe how much this game is teaching me about how to draw badly!

Still, I haven't received a single invite, even from yesterday. Technology, go fig.

I woke up to 39 completed games this morning and my stomach hurts from laughing. I'm hoopy by the way, and I draw with a mouse very, very badly.

I have yet to receive any invites. I really have no clue how the private game/invite system works.

I've been playing all afternoon. This is crazy fun. My name's lowkey.

I haven't been getting any invites either, just completed games. They arrive via email notification, and they could land in your spam folder; a couple of mine did.

Hey, there we go! I just got an invite and contributed a terrible drawing.

FWIW, no invites for me yet, either.

Okay, I strongly suspect I may have just participated in a Metafilter game -- no spoilers from me though. Seems to support the notion that you might sort of randomly "roll into" a game you're invited to (doesn't solve the puzzle of some people getting emails and some not, however). Surely we will report back here when a MeFi game is completed, right?
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 11:33 PM on March 14, 2009

Some of my games get completed, show up for a while on the site and in my email, and then disappear. When I try to look at them later, I get this message:

Whoopsies! Doesn't look like the game you're looking for can be shown.

Either it doesn't exist, or it's just not complete yet. Try again later!

This seems to happen to about a third of my games. Anybody else experiencing this?
posted by Secret Life of Gravy at 12:30 PM on March 15, 2009

I'm down with participating in Metafilter games. My wife and I both laughed ourselves silly looking at some of the "best of" games. Invite away. :D

Secret Life of Gravy, it appears that the admin deleted all the games that were trolled by the tree-drawing guy.

I'm in for a Metafilter game! Username is Lotto.

Because this game is clearly the most significant thing to happen in the history of MetaFilter/the internet, I have taken it to the gray.

Note to all players [crossposted from MetaTalk] :

I started a little page on the Wiki for players to add their accounts. It is adapted from spiderskull's latest version upthread, so the BPT links go to the players' drawing pages. I'd suggest keeping it that way for now, as they're pretty neat to browse. I would urge all players to add a link to their account, and include a link to their Metafilter profile while they're at it (especially if your MeFi and BPT usernames differ from one another).
