Legendary Threads and Hive Minds
April 20, 2009 11:09 AM   Subscribe

Epic threads gathered from the nether reaches of the Internet.: www.LegendaryThread.com.

The Mefi Wiki - a reordered Mefi - has a subset of legendary threads and things the hive mind has said. Comment Fables, for example. Mefi has all these mirrors to look at itself: ShadowyBackAlley.

There are others: LegendaryThreads.net

They seem interesting internet social phenomena. Do you know any more similar legendary thread sites? Do link!

I found this just now: http://theyumblog.wordpress.com/2007/07/26/iyengar-cuisine/. Can someone post it to the front page?

Derek Smart, Battle Cruiser 3000 and the greatest Usenet flamewar ever.

On this bodybuilding forum, one prominent contributor proposed to another that they agree to disagree over who was better: Ronnie Coleman or Dorian Yates.

Oh man, I remember that one about the booted Audi from a couple years back.
Everyone dreams about sticking it to petty twits like that, but not everyone gets to.

Things I learn from my patients, 2000+ comments from ER doctors about the crazy shit they see every day, is one of the most amazing threads I've ever read anywhere. It was posted to mefi a ways back, but the original mefi post has a non-functioning link. Highly recommended reading.

We didn't start the flamewar.

Somehow, that Collegehumor link reminds me of The Right Brothers' "Bush Was Right"- I can certainly imagine a certain amount of overlap of fanbase.

Only one AskMeFi thread made the list, but it's a great one.
posted by zarq at 11:58 AM on April 20, 2009

The first one I clicked on required me to set up an account... nope

the second one was 20 posts about not taking a bath because of the internet with lots of "lol's"

methinks that the definition of "legendary" is being misused...

Oh, this is exactly the kind of stuff I love. Thank you!
posted by archagon at 12:02 PM on April 20, 2009

Aww, that's nothing. They should have done the thread where the poor guy's girlfriend wanted him to poop on her (It started out innocently enough...she's into golden showers) or the charming young man who regularly sported pinstripes and a fedora, attended sex parties, approached hundreds of young women on the street to tell them they're gorgeous, and yet still had trouble picking up women?

Ho. Lee. Crap. I cannot believe that AskMe thread about the guy trying to find girls, dunkadunc. That is just far and away either one horribly pretentious dude, or someone with a black belt in trolling. The responses had me crying from laughing. Why don't more people post things like this in AskMe?

The very best legendary thread I've ever read was on the TiVo forums about the beeping house. The original link doesn't work anymore, perhaps someone has an update?

Also: Thanks for this. I've been home alone and not working for the past five days and am going out of my mind with boredom. I'm quite glad that I can read about ER patients instead of resorting to do my laundry!
posted by grapefruitmoon at 12:15 PM on April 20, 2009

I'd nominate these two.

Seems over half the posts are about Fedora.

You may be interested in the associated Metatalk thread, then.

Huh. Well now I feel thoroughly terrible about laughing at the AskMe post. Great.

This thread strikes me as having the highest amusement-potential of any on that page, but it is reg-req, so boo.

Also, no updates to the site in nearly a year, and one of the more recent posts is self congratulation about the improved look of the page. Can't imagine how much worse it was before.

This is one of my favorite metafilter links ever. It links to a legendary thread which "contains heavy amounts of all-caps and awesome." You need to read down some for the awesome.

I invite you all to enjoy the (NSFW) legendary thread that is "what to do when your roommate doesn't realize you're home and thusly is having loud sex in the living room," from ILX.
posted by escabeche at 2:46 PM on April 20, 2009

Oh man, that ILX thread delivers.

The phrase "scrawny inde fop wearing a trucker hat and nothing else" may haunt me until the end of my days.

I followed the booted-Audi-APS thread last year. But a gag order was issued during the summer. I never heard what happened after. Google has nothing new. Can anyone tell me how this turned out?

There's not enough time! ARGH! I HATE YOU MEFI! Every day of my life is spent torn between deciding whether to blog, watch a movie, catch up on a television series I like, read all of these threads (just added to my list), try to find new bands to listen to, or, finally, sit down and actually draw stuff in the hopes of one day not having to work in a cubical anymore. You know what wins out? Me playing video games on one screen while I try to watch a movie on another and 5 hours of sleep a night. I CAN'T KEEP DOING THIS.

If you're not reading that ER thread, you should be.

"When your 15yo daughter gives precipitous delivery to a bleating, underweight infant 30 minutes after presenting to triage c "gas pains", you should run around the department loudly yelling, "I don't know what y'all did or who that baby is, but my lil' girl warn't pregnant when she come in here""

Well, there goes the rest of my week…

Whoa, I missed the MeTa thread on that one. Seriously, taters?

I find these are all lacking if they don't include the Mall Ninja. (covered in this FPP)

By the time it made it here, it was just an add-on to other legendary threads elsewhere, but I'm particularly proud of my most popular FPP.

Wow, the audi booted one really pissed me off. It makes me wonder why people don't just rise up and kick out whatever agency responsible for the parking pass debacle right on their asses.
