Ice Football and the Golden Bowling Shoe

On May 29, 2009, Stuttgart took home the Golden Bowling Shoe at the first Deutscher Eisfusßball Pokal (that's "German Ice Football Cup" for the English speaking folks). Yes, that's right - those are grown men playing soccer, on ice, in bowling shoes.

According to the official site (fyi: in German), Eisfusßball originated with the German tv show "Schlag den Raab" (English: "Beat Raab"), where contestants attempt to win silly and crazy challenges for prize money. This contestant seems to have failed miserably (the action starts around the 1:50 mark) - but all was not lost, as it resulted in a new sport.

Here's hoping that 2009 will be just the beginning, heralding annual Golden Bowling Shoe Cup Playoffs.

(Admittedly, this is not the first time that football/soccer has been played on the ice. An enterprising American created a marketable version called a "Boot'r" ["a durable, custom designed, and oversized cloth-filled puck whose weight and shape help players to keep it in play on the ice"], which allows anyone to play, no special skills required - although padding is strongly recommended. But due to the fact that bowling shoes are not on the list of acceptable footwear, this is not considered true Eisfusßbal.)

Raab is also the one behind Wok WM. Bobsled track + Wok = Fun.

Maybe the best St. Pauli has ever played, on, or off the ice.

I saw this on TV while in Nurnberg. Just about the best game ever invented!

fwiw, the players on the team are relatively well-known ex-players or people in the management of the football teams.

oh, and there's also a woman who played :)

Eisfuball

Eisfussball mit drei S? das ist fast so gut wie "Schifffahrt" oder "Nussstrudel".

mach di keine Sorgen, i werde diese Post niet mehr veroaschen.

We Ukers are always lead to believe the Germans have no sense of humour. Then they produce this. Give everyone Furry outfits and you've got "It's a Knockout".

Is that really a sell-out crowd in the arena too...?

That's totally great man. Thanks for sharing. It's the middle of (adult) soccer league season here, and I've got it on the brain!

dunkadunc, ahhh, thanks for pointing that out. Sorry about that. Forgot to delete the placeholder "s" when putting in the html for the scharfes.

To all, please look past my inability to type in German, and enjoy the football-on-ice (which I did see live when I was Austria and was surprised to discover it is a recent thing, because it was just too darn awesome).

Also, I nearly submitted another typo just now: "footballl on ice", so apparently I just can't type. Bring on triplet letters.

I love wacky sports. They're fun to watch and almost level the playing field for non-athletic people like myself if everyone is slipping on ice or in mud or down the hill after the cheese or what-have-you.

Actually, I kind of like it spelled "Eisfusßball". Go figure.

This is superb, thanks. Would trying rugby be pushing it too far?

Strangely inefficient for Germans.
