You can come and visit my mantises, Thorzdad. I've got two juvenile mantises growing in my back yard, from an egg sack laid by one of last summer's mantises. I hate the area I live in, but I have to admit we have great bugs.
Thanks for the link, zamboni. Those are some nice sculptures.

"You Should Come And Meet The Mantises" is now the title of the disturbing science fiction novel I'll never write.

I was alerted to the presence of the largest mantis I've ever seen by a terrier, who felt menaced by the insect. We walked out to see what the dog was going on about to find this thing, nearly a foot high, waving its arms around as the dog kept yapping with a kind of frantic "I'm scared, and it's big, but it's also thin, and I don't know what the deal is" confusion.
It was around eight inches tall. Yes, I grabbed a ruler because damn that's a big mantis, but it was hard to measure because it would not let me come that close, and it kept rocking back and forth, shifting its body. I did not know they could reach that size. I'd seen stick insects about four inches long in the country, big enough to be audible if they got into the apartment and began clambering around.
Definitely one of my favorite bugs. Now I want one in that display posture that says "piss off, I am big and freaky."

Very cool sculptutre.
One provided me with an ego-boosting moment; I got a decent photo of a mantis sitting on my window. A while later my bank started offering custom-print EFTPOS cards and I decided I wanted the Mantis on mine. They rejected it on the grounds that it looked like a professional photograph, and would therefore be a breach of copyright.
I was at once pissed and smug.

I hatched a cocoon of them a few summers back, bought from the local garden supply store. I kept it in a converted fish tank I'd had stored in the garage; once it hatched I fed them the aphids off my rose bushes.
Carnivorous little buggers, started eating each other until finally only one was left. He grew quite big and was able to eat store-bought baby crickets. I kept him on a plant I had sitting on my kitchen table and would place him on the window screen for fresh air and sunlight, until one day my roommate forgot he was there and lowered the mini blinds...when I found him he was thoroughly cooked. Bummer.

Love mantises. I kept one as a pet for a short bit when I was a kid. Fed it bees. It would snatch one right out of the air, then eat until just the bee's empty butt was left. I'd let it walk all over me and for some reason it wouldn't bother trying to fly off. After about a week I took it to the park and said goodbye. Nice fellow.
What the hell that has to do with these fantastic sculptures, I couldn't tell you.

If museums of the future have objects, these would make fitting artifacts from these times. Really gorgeous.
