EmpressCallipygos has beaten me to it, I'm afraid. I blame the insidious practice of auto-replacing emoticons with smilies that has become rather common with certain software (such as IM).

If I've learned something about humans it is that body language adds a lot to how you interpret emotion. So I think it's a good idea.

Afroblanco's comment made me think, a lot of these smilies don't even have an associated emoticon. Some of them are easy enough (:S :) :( etc) but how the fuck do you represent someone vomiting or with hearts in their hair with text?

twine42, I dunno, I reckon the first is probably more correct, as it would be an assignative statement (or at least, up until the former was stated, the latter would not be true in my books).
