"Well Done. Pineapple and soy sauce is a tasty food combination."

Wait, what? Those were all pretty sucky if you ask me.

It was cool until it became a quiz.

The timer really fucks with you. I hate shit like that; as far as I'm concerned it's an artificial increase in the difficulty of the challenge thing.

Same with the bacon and white chocolate question. Bacon tastes good with just about anything.
The musical notes question was pretty cool though.

And then, yeah, it became a quiz. How the fuck is knowing why supertasters are supertasters a challenge to my senses?

It's testing your visual sensory perception.

That was neat, until it sucked.

Totally disagree on the taste questions!

For one thing, I dislike soy sauce. And clearly, they never ate my grandmother's standard dinner salad, a pineapple ring atop iceberg lettuce with a dollop of mayo and some carrot shavings on top.

And white chocolate and caviar tastier than white chocolate and bacon? Ridiculous!

Also a "mixture of notes" is not the same thing as "a note." So I don't believe that asking if the "blue note" was higher or lower sets up a fair question.

I can't pinpoint why, but that pissed me off.

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one who got pissed off that "white chocolate and bacon" was considered a wrong answer!

I have been mislead. This has nothing to to with Gary Senese.

Some of that was pretty neat, although some of those questions weren't "testing your senses" so much as a general knowledge quiz and a few judgment calls.

I'm also on the white chocolate and bacon bandwagon. Particularly because caviar is disgusting.

You call this a challenge of my sinuses? Dude, I've been snorting that Tabasco-wasabi combo since, like, fifth grade.

Deep-fried Mars Bars is a speciality in my home town - Glasgow. When Scots want to clog their arteries, they don't prat about.

It's nice to have my life-long contention that parmesan smells like barf validated by SCIENCE! (Or at least, by the Beeb.)

This was fun, thanks!

I take it your friends have never had to distinguish the harry-potter-themed jellybeans labeled as "spaghetti" and "vomit." Believe me, it's a difficult task.

I only got the butyric acid one right because of this AskMe. Thanks Metafilter!

Also, because of this quiz, I am eating some bacon with white chocolate right now and it is DELICIOUS. Caviar can suck it.
posted by maqsarian at 1:02 PM on July 31, 2009

Black caviar and white chocolate are an excellent flavor pairing because they both contain 2-butanone, 2-methylbutanal, 3-methylbutanal and pentanal. The methylbutanals in particular contribute to the overlapping aroma of roe and white chocolate. DUH.

I can't believe supertasters are actually real.

I always thought that was just the word my wussy friends made up to re-brand themselves as winners instead of losers because they couldn't handle spicy food.

In what sense do I give a shit?

Miko: that wasn't a mixture of notes, it was just a note with carefully selected harmonics. It is the same trick used to make the risset / shephard effect, which you can hear here.
posted by idiopath at 10:35 AM on August 1, 2009

Oops, missed out on the even cooler continuous risset version. It may be hard to tell with that short sequence, but you can listen to it for hours and it never stops seeming to descend in pitch.
