thesixtyone is a site for the "democratization of music": tunes submitted by artists are voted up and down by users, digg-style. Standard Web 2.0 bling (Creative Commons, RSS and Twitter feed) is integrated with some nice features, including keyboard shortcuts and in-browser visualisation.

That's actually very well put together. Damn.

Also, the current top song, Can't Stand the Rain, is pretty damn good too.

This site is really cool. I put up a page for the band I used manage, and the songs rose modest levels without any kind of stat gaming. A keen site for a lot of pure music lovers.

A double, though the site has changed a lot in two years.

One of the members of my band set us up there a while ago, although it looks like he hasn't added any of our most recent (better-produced) stuff...

t61 is great. It's currently the only music site that I use other than good ol' MeFiMusic. I've made $2.50 in donations so far, which is pretty cool. Might get myself a soda pop.

And now i'm listening to JAHBIL, which is also kick ass.

And unfortunately, there's the rub... How long before this does turn into a race to see who can best game their way to the top of the stack (either by brute force social hacks or by other more technical hacks)?

Despite being a lot more commercial friendly than this, OurStage at first seemed to do pretty decent job of sorting the good to the top of the heap, but before long, the games began--I personally know of artists who've tried to cheat their way to the top on those charts with some degree of success.

Just give it enough time and the same corrupting tendencies will come to dominate here, too. People can't stand letting selection processes run their course naturally without f-ing it all up by forcing their preferred outcomes.

I'm not sure if the "quests" are really stupid, or if I'm just annoyed because I'll have to complete them all.

I love t61. I've been listening to it for about a month and a half, and I leave it running whenever I'm sitting at my PC. There is so much quality stuff on there.

I was not aware that there was downvoting...?

I like the screensaver/visualizer that comes up after a while when you leave it alone
