Lil' Loves Get Low

"The so-called "Mississippi Madman," connects the energy of crunk with African American spirituality and youthful abandon." But what exactly is crunk? While some might say it is a concoction, folk etymology suggests the modern usage of crunk originated as a portmanteau of the words "crazy" and "drunk" or having been "cranked up" to a level of excitability at which one becomes "crunk". But I think the kids have it on this one.

Were it not for the context and definition, I would have never expected "crunk" to mean something good. Just from onomatopoeia. For some reason, it makes me think of a crushed beer can. Not even good beer. Like Coors Light or something.

Come on, everyone knows "crunk" is the past tense of "crank".

I first heard the word Crunk used bit on Conan O'Brien during his first year in a bit where he wanted to make up his own swear word. The guest that night was Ice-T, and Conan joked that if he could get Ice T to use the word, then it would get street cred. I didn't start hearing the word in hip hop until after that. Wikipedia can say what it wants. I'm giving full credit to Conan.

Yeah, but there was a huge gap.

Fun post. Totally love the little red haired rascal dancing in your "Youthful Abandon" link. My favorite YouTube comment: "Ginger.... this Friday, after preschool... me and you... at the club. Boom Boom Baby."

From the comments his name seems to be Henry and he's already been on the Tyra Banks show 3 months ago.

We go to the clubs to find the crunk. It's like a ball of fire in your spirit

That's a lot different than the conk, then, 'cause that was like a ball of fire on your head...

Rudy Rucker has used the word 'crunk', but it might be a separate creation.

Yeah, but that's not exactly fair. I think Rudy Rucker has made up every word you can make up.

If those parents don't turn off the BET real soon, he's gonna be pimping out his sister faster than you can say R. Kelly.

These things take time, you know.

Yeah, but there was a huge gap.

Conan started in '93 and Outkast uses the word on their first album, which came out in '94, so the timeline kinda works.

Crunk always reminds me of butoh. I don't want to watch, but I can't look away.

Back in Junior High the fall dance was called the Crunkin' Pumpkin. That pretty much encapsulates the administrations attempts to "relate" or whatever.

None of us had any clue what it meant though.
