Rammstein is not a subtle band (NSFW)

Rammstein's Pussy (video, really NSFW, SLnYT) gets right to the point. Youtube has taken down uploads. Facebook has taken down links (though not Links). Here's a fan-created censored version (NSFW lyrics).

Contrast Pussy with their earlier work, Keine Lust, in which they parody themselves as old, fat, and sexless (until they rock, of course). Are they intentionally following a route blazed by Spinal Tap?

Pussy is not the band's first controversial video. Their cover of Depeche Mode's Stripped used footage from Leni Riefenstahl's 1936 Olympics documentary, Olympia (including the beautiful diving sequence). When asked whether it was wise to base their video on a film commissioned by Hitler, the band said that they are not Nazis.

It's also substantially less cocky (no pun intended) than most songs about sex.

Apparently the band is used to such risqueness, as apparently they got kicked out of a venue they were performing in in Worcester, MA after simulating anal sex on stage. Fun stuff.

D: Laibach can’t seem to get Wat reviewed without silly comparisons to Rammstein. I’ve seen lots of arguments about Rammstein stealing elements from Laibach in the past, mostly concerning vocal style and even logo design. I’m curious of your reaction to this.

L: Laibach does not believe in originality and we don’t consider ourselves as sole authors and owners of our own ideas. Therefore, Rammstein could not “steal” much from us. They simply let themselves get inspired by our work, which is absolutely a legitimate process. We are glad that they made it. In a way, they have proven once again that a good “copy” can make more money on the market than the “original.” Anyhow, today we share the territory: Rammstein seem to be a kind of Laibach for adolescents and Laibach are Rammstein for “grown-ups.”

Considering my mother is in her mid 50s, is fluent in german, and finds their lyrics to be pure comedy, I am fairly certain there's no real "controversy" here...

I've been listening to Rammstein since Herzeleid was released and have bought every album since then; they all have their own distinct edge to them, and their musicianship is first rate. (Seriously, see them live, they are extremely tight as a band and do an excellent stage show.) "Nazi metal finds its apotheosis. Gross."

Considering it appear about not being a Nazi and instead being accepting of each other, the concept, a member of the band Rammstein being unable to get casual sex in Germany is laughable, obviously this is a deft multi-layered parody

1) Music videos tend to be pornographic without the actual meat of it. This is actually graphic and explicit, rather than the pointless teasing, they went full on. However they obviously CG'd the band members into at lest some of the scenes.

2) The Music and Lyrics are very close to "The Bad Touch", this may be as close to "Funny" as Rammstein gets.

3) The Lyrics are about how it shouldn't matter who you are, we can all get along. Pop Will eat Itself did this with Ich Beine Eine Auslander (spelling?)

4) The Music is a clear Depeche Mode Parody.

They aren't known for subtle, they ARe known for political commentary, this really looks like it.

Also, did anyone else get the vibe that it is kind of an indictment of the "Hey I gotta dick/pussy; so get down" mentality some performers put out there? I dunno though the climax makes me think I have that wrong.

There is always the chance that they are just getting old and like singing songs to/about their dongs.

Here's the wikipedia article on "Flake" the guy with the tits in the video. It doesn't say he's a transvestite, I think they would mention that.

That threw me a bit too.

Here's the wikipedia article on "Flake" the guy with the tits in the video. It doesn't say he's a transvestite, I think they would mention that.

That article do explain why he's playing one in the video, though:

In the band's performances and videos, Flake is often cast as the outsider of the group, possibly due to his relatively unusual presence as a keyboard player in a heavy metal group. This varies from playing the part of a scientific genius, aloof from the rest of the group, to playing a gimp role, to being left alone at the end of the "Keine Lust" video, and being bullied by the rest of the band, particularly Lindemann.

I'm still amazed (and amused) by the fact that so many MeFi:tes seem to think that anything in that video has anything to do with reality...

And I was tempted to write something about the Jante-fueled "to hell with you, fellow countryman for being successful without my permission" outrage we saw earlier, but then I realized that MetaFilter is powered by a minor variation of the same thing, so let's not go there today. And the Nazi stuff? WTF, MetaFilter?

Originally read this as Rammstein's "Puppy" and then wondered why it was NSFW.

I hear this story from my my ex of some years ago, who was in law school at NYU at the time:

They had a guest lecturer from Germany one day, and no one really knew in advance what the topic was going to be. As the lecture began, the visiting professor kept talking about "ze evil puppy" and how "we must eradicate ze puppy".

Eventually the students gathered that the lecture was about heroin exports from Afghanistan, and the professor was really talking about "the poppy". Needless to say, the audience was still putting in great effort to stop themselves from laughing throughout the whole thing every time he said that, with varying degrees of success.

I just want to say that every time I hear or see the word "Twitter" I'm reminded of Zwitter and giggle a bit inside.

Also, yeah, if you're wondering if the bad lyrics are intentional, you need to listen to a complete album. They've been doing the "Here are some well-written songs, and here are some songs with simplistic shock lyrics to get us some play time" since forever. Te Quiero Puta, Rein Raus, Bueck Dich, Mann gegen Mann, and so on. Actually, if you pick a recent album you can get at least 3 completely distinct styles, one of them being the "shock slogan" one that sells albums.

As for the dick-e pronunciation meaning something in German, I was wondering that. Wordplay is a heavy element in their songs, so I bet this one's intentional too.

Also, if you want authentic Faux Nazi music, you don't need to cross the Atlantic. There's Hanzel und Gretyl right here. But seriously, if you're calling any of these guys Nazi you missed Laibach's memo about ridiculing Nazism by being deadpan over-the-top Nazi.

Recapitulating:
Industrial Metal, comes from Germany or sings in German, Laibach cited as main influence - Over-the-top faux-nazi
Black Metal, Scandinavian or East European, likes looking badass and scaring children - Possibly neonazi.
Punk Rock, Britain, "Rock Against Communism" - Probably neonazi
Teen pop, Californian, cutesy twin teenage girls - Definitely nazi

Lots of lady-doth-protest-too-much hating on fourcheesemac for the Nazi comment.

Get real guys. Rammstein have been making coy, transgressive nods to Nazi aesthetic since they've existed. It's not even subtle. On the other hand, this doesn't make them neo-Nazi, or anti-Semitic, or even assholes. It makes them artists and shock-rockers. (Not that I'm saying they are good artists. Oh, on the contrary.)

You don't have to throw a rock very far into mainstream entertainment to knock out someone else doing the same shit. Epecially into the metal/industrial/goth crowd. But outside of it is common as well. Most recently in Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds; but that's not surprising, Tarantino is mainstream Hollywood's transgressive shock-rocker.

... Oh alright... maybe it does make them assholes.

Nobody calls Ministry Nazis though (there was a better video on youtube some time back, where they were pretty clearly doing Nazi salutes on stage but it seems to have been removed).

These Neue Deutsche Haerte bands have been pulling this schtick for twenty years now and some of them may be Nazis, who knows? All I can say is when I see Rammstein in a video or live with their black leather and ambiguous sexuality and S&M and flamethrowers and rubber penises, I don't think Nazis, I think Rob Halford. The only reason others get a free pass and NDH bands don't seems to be because they're German.

Where I come from we call that "satire" and "parody". The stuff is blatantly over-the-top. Anyone who takes their schtick seriously wants to believe they're Nazis. Laibach used to get hit with the same charge in the 80s. Like vanar sena said, every other band in the world who does this schtick gets a free pass, but Rammstein doesn't, because they're German.

Well, that was more explicit than I was expecting, but hilarious. It appears to be a testament to how over the top most acts are that this doesn't hit some people as parody. How obvious do the jokes have to be?
Rammstein appears determined to find out.

The more I think about this video, the more I like it.

It's the perfect fuck-you to a ridiculous culture that will go to any lengths to protect the children by deciding that nudity must be abolished, but that nobody's really naked as long as you can't see their nipples.

What I love about this video is the way it starts off with all the usual conventions of western video: almost naked (BUT NO NIPPLES!) women fawning over rock stars. And then it just follows it through to its gruesomely logical conclusion.

If all the other music videos that featured lithe, gyrating, mostly-naked women were this honest, they too would end with the band members ejaculating all over the models while fixing the camera with shit-eating grins.

My guess as someone who speaks German is that he's going for the cheap pun. ('dick' in German is 'thick' and not...umm, yeah...as adoarns said above). But what was funniest was kittens for breakfast making my boyfriend show me the video (hey! convenient German speaker in the next room!) and me going "yeah...uh huh....uh huh...looks pretty much like German TV to me."

I think, on that basis alone, I may have caused kittens for breakfast to want to move to Germany.
