Bubble Tanks Tower Defense a flash tower defense game by HeroInteractive, creator of Bubble Tanks & Bubble Tanks 2. In many ways a Desktop Tower Defense clone/knock-off, but does add some of its own ideas to the mix.

Heroin Teractive? What's a Teractive? Or is that Ter Active, where "Ter" is an abbreviation or stands for something else?

At least it's no PenIsland.com.

Hhile a really nice tower defence implementation… I am so over tower defence.

Are there any tower defence games actually re-imagining the game type? Or are they all just incremental improvements on the original?

Here you go. Bloons 1, 2 and 3 are worth checking out too.

Have you tried Immortal Defense (windows only afaik)? It's not new, but I don't think a lot of people have played it. Its story has drawn comparison to Planescape: Torment. Which, if you hold Ps:T's story in as high regard as I do, is pretty strong praise. If you have windows and the idea of a story driven TD game is interesting to you, I would avoid all reviews as they tend to be spoilery and just dive into the demo.

On looking at their front page again, they do say that a mac version is on the way, but a quick skim through the forums didn't find any ETA announcement.

Yes! There are serious games offering some defense-like components.

The current tower defense games arose from special maps created for StarCraft and WarCraft III, whose multi-player facets made them more fun, despite other limitations.

Savage 2 is a freeware online game where each team has one commander who builds structures from a real time strategy perspective, while other players control one single unit. It's very much like a defense game for the commander players since computer controlled units just attack.

Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper II are easily the best defense-like games ever created, but eventually the game converts into an real time strategy game vs. other dungeon keepers.

There's a reason we do these on Fridays. I have work to do, that will now get done tomorrow.

I love Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2, but I can't seem to get them to run stably. They're too new for DOSbox, too old for Windows Vista/7. Same story with StarTopia. Seems like we need a Windows 95 Box. And no, Sun Virtual Box doesn't work for it, and I tried VMware Fusion, too.

The "all upgrades stem from a single tower" concept reminds me a lot of the Protector series, and the "giant tower merge" interests me. Definitely intriguing enough to get my attention.

There's also NUD (windows only, free) which is a very puzzle-y take (seems like there's often only one way to beat a level) on the genre and features a rewind mechanic so you don't have to start from the beginning again when you mess up. It's neat because you'd think that would make it a breeze, but it's often tricky figure out where you messed up.

I loved the bubble tanks games, and am a TD junkie, so thanks for this. That said, agreed that Immortal Defense was absolutely awesome.. Garden Defense and Plants vs. Zombies were two other PC games which were huge loads of fun. As for the browser games, gemcraft chapter zero is still the king, IMO.

Hm. After a weekend of playing, it's fun, but there may be some scaling issues of some sort. I played the unlimited waves, single entrance that unlocks off the second tutorial level, and uh...yeah. Let's just say that either

-megamega towers are seriously overpowered, or
-level scaling is a bit too small of an incremental thing

Without any juggling of any kind (I suck at it, and I'm against it in a philosophical sense), I made it past level _10,000_, with a final score of over 300 BILLION. And that probably could have gone even longer, but I got bored and sent about 40 levels at once to kill it.

But still, fun times.

I realize this is a two week old post but is anyone else playing this?

I can't beat the "back and forth" level to save my life. Has anyone else figured out a way?

I'm still playing on and off but I haven't even gotten to "back and forth" yet.

Immortal Defense is on sale at the low, low price of pay-whatever-you-want although they get nothing if you pay 30 cents or less.

I gave up. I'm convinced it's not possible. You either need another 60 bubbles to start or they need to start the creeps a little lower level.
