Not Right Now, Derrick!

Hey Alex, check out my new haircut. NOT RIGHT NOW DERRIK! Hey Alex, what are you doing? I'M LISTENING TO MY MUSIC, DERRICK! Hey Alex WHAT DO YOU WANT DERRICK? Presenting: BalloonShop

Comprised of Thomas Gore, Josh Pursley, and Olan Rogers, BalloonShop makes hilarious videos for youtube. Incorporating physical comedy, musical numbers, remixes, and an over-arching sense of (un)seriousness, I really hope that these guys make it big.

What's the, um . . . what's the deal with these? I know that I like some comedy that falls totally flat with other people, but I didn't so much as crack a smile on the two of these that I watched. Can you give some context that might help me understand? Seriously, help me out—not trying to be all 'your favorite band sucks,' just hoping for background on how this is any different/better than something like Kids in the Hall or Strangers with Candy.

I laughed, but at the same time I felt so sorry for their neighbors.

Why do all videos like this smack of repressed homoeroticism? Dudes, just whip 'em out and get it over with.

Don't make a video of it.

I laughed, but at the same time I felt so sorry for their neighbors parents.

I almost laughed, but then something would invariably push it past "funny" and into "trying too hard" territory.

Whips was my favourite, but only because I've always wanted to have a good whip fight. Make of that what you will.

Yeah...I was waiting for someone else to poop the thread before I did. I have a low humour threshold. I will laugh at almost anything. This did not make me laugh at all.

It's funny, but it's not ha-ha funny. And, like, it seems (it really, really seems) like they were trying quite hard for ha-ha funny. This is more "oh my god remember how lame you were when you were that age? aren't you glad you didn't have youtube back then?" funny.

I feel like this would be hilarious if i were really high.

I am not really high.

Tim and Eric did it first. Or at least before these guys did.

Did anyone else think of HORSE the Band's A Million Exploding Suns?

I watched the pepper one and two of the derrik ones and thought "this is funny in a 'what's that watermelon doing here' kind of way." Then I watched Josh Running from Melons and now everything makes sense.

As each video progressed, it managed to annoy me and amuse me in about equal measure, and that measure was a lot.

Let's not oversell this crap, eh?

Yeah, well, maybe ... he ... owns stock in them. Yeah.

(Ok, I don't really get this either. Then again, I didn't get Napoleon Dynamite so much, so.)

I thought they were funny, but then again I had a roommate just like that.

What I wanted to know is why when I clicked to watch the Josh Running from Melons video, one of the related videos was Tokyo Police Club's "In a Cave"? Don't get me wrong, I loves me some TPC, but my initial thought was all, "Does YouTube now also run some search algorithm based on similarity in haircuts or something? Is something in the keywords getting cut off? Are the keywords after 'Josh Running from Melons Balloon shop comedy sketch' supposed to be 'floppy coiffure indie college boy flip farrah manfawcett XTREME feathering get a job'?"

...then I realized it was actually in their "more from" box and that Olan Rogers directed it so...oops. So, uh....yeeeeaaa...if they're reading this I actually do like the video for "In a Cave" guys *waves sheepishly*.

Damn. I came in here to mention Napoleon Dynamite and Tim and Eric, and people beat me to both.

It's absurdist humor. Works for me, but not for lots of people I know.

I was unable to find the funny in this at all. Which worries me. Have I finally aged to the point where I don't understand a younger generation?

This was absolutely fucking lame. You could get the same laughs by saying Hurf Durf in a funny voice a couple of times.

Derrick's shit-eating smirk in the first video made me laugh.

Come over here and enjoy some salteens and some tomatoes, just enjoy the game. Seriously, you don't need to be eating that, man

Seriously. Don't be eating the world's hottest pepper.

It wasn't funny but it was a nice haircut. I can't vouch for the shirt's softness.
