Your second comment in 1 year and 8 months and it's about a common mistake/typo LAME.

Also: I'm not going to get any work done today, am I? I wish this was a thing you could hold in your hand and use, like an etch-a-sketch. For the first time, an iPad makes sense.

I knew my comment was wrong at the time, but now I can quantify how wrong. In the general case of n objects that you are choosing k of and you can have as many gaps as you want, the count is (I think...my officemate is convinced anyway): (2n)!/(n!k!(2n-k)!).

But in the special case where n = 2k, as it is here, it is just 2n-1. (Proof: Pascal's Triangle. QED.)

So there are 213 songs we can make with this, which is 8192.

Thank the gods you posted this on Thursday and not Monday. Thank the productivity gods indeed.

For DreamerFi's link: ignore the instructions, and just play with the tone matrix. It's awesome.
posted by HeroZero at 4:30 PM on March 11, 2010

DU, the sum of the first eight terms (k = 0 thru 7) of the n = 14th row of Pascals triangle is 9,908.

So there are 9,907 combos if you don't count silence.

Last time we played with a tone matrix I spent a little time with it (read: way too much time with it) and made an audio-visual performance for my fellow MeFites.

Oh, it looks like I had an off-by-one error on the rows. (We somehow managed not to write down the second row...) But the general solution is still right. I hope.
