Benjamin Netanyahu, Pastor John Hagee, and Israeli Settlements

Widely reported last week, VP Biden's visit to Israel coincided with the announcement by Israel for approved construction of 1600 new homes in occupied East Jerusalem (contrary to U.S. wishes, and complicating Biden’s mission to help jump start the peace process). Less reported, however, was that the day before Biden's visit, Israeli PM Netanyahu gave a key speech at a conference organized by (far-right, TX-based evangelical) Pastor John Hagee, who has donated millions of dollars to Israeli far-right and pro-settlement groups (via).

This post was deleted for the following reason: I/P threads and "omg evangelical" threads don't go well here and this thread is going badly. If you'd like to make a thread about I/P issues or evangelicals it needs to be done differently. Maybe we can all try again tomorrow? -- jessamyn

Well, I am glad this Jonh Hagee guy seems totally sane. First video makes my head spin. About 3:30 in he credits the gays with causing Katrina.

I'm actually starting to wish for the second coming of Christ so he can finally put these clowns in their place. Which is not at the side of God in Heaven.

Trivia note: Hagee's flock includes WWE legend Shawn Michaels.

Oh and also Hitler.

Hitler is like a Pokemon card that they only made one of or whatever you can literally play it at any time (if you are Israel) and it renders everything else irrelevant.

It's really no secret that Millennialist / Eschatological Xianist groups believe that Israel (specifically the reconstruction of the Temple in Jerusalem) is key to setting the stage for getting Jesus to come back. I'm not at all surprised that John Hagee is working hard on behalf of the settlement program and attached organizations.

I wish there were better penalties to exert against US Citizens who go abroad and deliberately work against stated US policy.

Well something tells me that if Hagee were a Muslim imam, rather than an evangelical pastor, and had gone to Tehran to denounce Israel instead of Jerusalem to denounce Iran, he might not have made it out of the Houston airport.

Israel/Palestine is like The Game.

There are no good guys on either side. It's a mess. So if you care about it at all, aside from the fact that your tax dollars are fueling the clusterfuck, you lose.

Jesus is the reason for the treason.

At the University of Windsor, the Jerusalem Old City Initiative - headed by the former Canadian ambassador to Israel, Egypt and Jordan - is building a framework for going forward with a peace process in a city host to holy sites for three major world religions. Podcast on progress c. 2008 here.
