Police release composite photos of "showing what Chandra Levy may look like now if she has changed her appearance."

Aren't the police supposed to have sophisticated software that actually generates composites? These look like an advanced 12-year-old's Photoshop skills at work...

Shit, I'd rather be kidnapped than make my hair do that

dear God. is it really necessary to humiliate this poor girl in this way?
posted by rebeccablood at 1:28 PM on July 15, 2001

Umm.. is it insensitive to suggest that photos of Chandra Levy right now would look very, very different due to the effects of decomposition? Doesn't look like the police took that into account.

I'm not sure I understand the intent of this... Think of Michael Jackson and how his appearance has been... "changed." For all they know, Chandra Levy could more closely resemble Ving Rhames right now than this picture (which when looked at quickly bears a disquieting resemblance to a smiling Gertrude Stein, not a concept I was sitting around wishing I could see, let me tell you). So what's the point of publishing a picture of her with almost-mullet-'do?

The hair in Pic No. 3 just has to come from a Whitesnake video. Remind me to never disappear.

killing an intern never stopped ted kennedy, why would it stop this guy?

Is the Barbie digital makeover kit all the D.C. police force could afford? Geez, go out and write some parking tickets or something...

Mary Jo Kopechne was not an intern. And the incident did keep Ted Kennedy from ever being elected president, or even winning a Democratic nomination. Otherwise, he has the Kennedy name, which tends to carry a lot more clout or advantage than the Condit name does in California or anywhere else.

No more parking tickets in DC, for the love of god, I've got to eat.

If I were the person to discover Chandra Levy alive and well, and she had hair like that (any of those), the first thing I'd do would be sneak her into an underground hair salon before the press turned up on the scene with the cameras... after everything she'd been through, the poor girl would deserve at least that favor.

These pictures are sad -- but for the context they would be laughable, as though Conan O'Brien had been elected Chief of Police. In context, they simply support the charge that the D.C. police are trying harder to look busy than to be busy. See also Pat Oliphant's July 12th cartoon.

I'm sorry, but this won't help me until they add a picture of her with a bright green mohawk. Or maybe a shaggy Beatles 'do.

I caught those on yahoo most emailed content the other day.

I considered metafiltering them with the tagline: Fire that PhotoShopper!

Because, like, those are really sad composites. And for official police release, really really sad.

Is the third picture in the sequence supposed to be what she would look like if she has made herself black and white?

jennak: Does that not strike you as awfully strange? The AP says she *told her family* that she couldn't carry ID when she was off with with her "boyfriend" and "secret lover." As in, apparently, Hey, mom, I'm going off with my secret lover today. Oh, and I can't carry an ID. Wow. Weird parents, or weird woman, or inaccurate report.
posted by raysmj at 8:23 AM on July 16, 2001

Inaccurate report...no. The report states what the lawyers said. The lawyers could be inaccurate, but the report is merely stating what the lawyers said.

Not meant to be anything other than just a question, because I can't find an answer and I know someone here can tell me -- isn't Rock Creek Park where Vince Foster's body was found?
posted by Dreama at 9:55 AM on July 16, 2001

On July 20, 1993, police and rescue personnel were called to Fort Marcy Park in suburban Northern Virginia. They found Mr. Foster lying dead with a gun in his right hand and gunshot residue-like material on that hand.

I don't think so, but I'm too lazy to find the original document.

FYI, Rock Creek is huge, and is a common dumping grounds for evidence, bodies.

Good god, she looked up a map of a location 2 miles from her house on her laptop and then disappeared, and it's taken the police more than 10 weeks to search that location? I'm wordless.

Condit's spokesperson "called into question Levy's character and sexual habits at the very moment the city's Metropolitan Police are scouring Washington's Rock Creek Park for her body."

"It's the kind of hardball ploy you'd expect to find in the heat of a political campaign -- but not in a missing-person case involving a politician who officially isn't a suspect."
