Frasier hates big government and flightless birds.

Set to launch this summer, Right Network will feature content "to entertain, engage, and enlighten Americans who are looking for content that reflects and reinforces their perspective and worldview." In an ad for the network, Kelsey Grammer lists some things that "just aren't right," including "big government," "more taxes," "trillion dollar deficits," "bureaucrats," "overspending," "bailouts for billionaires," "flightless birds," and "partisan politics," among others.

Some blogs have been reporting that the network is a joint venture with Comcast, a claim that Comcast now disputes. The confusion apparently stems from the fact that one of the network's backers, Ed Snider, is Chairman of Comcast subsidiary Comcast-Spectator.

The Right Network company overview [pdf].

Some of the shows planned to air on the network will be:
"Running," a reality show about people running for political office
"Right to Laugh," a standup comedy show featuring mostly right-wing humor
"Politics and Poker," a political discussion and celebrity poker show, hosted by Thomas F. Wilson (a.k.a. Biff from Back to the Future.)

I'm torn -- on one hand, the number of conservative Christian stations on my cable seems to outnumber the ones I actually watch, so a non-Christian Right channel might be refreshing. On the other hand, I have no reason to watch a conservative channel regardless. If their 'right wing humor' is anything like the unamusing stand-up comic show "Wretched" and the 'family friendly' stand-up comedy show "LOL The Comedy Special" on FamilyNet, they can expect a lot of viewers looking to have their worldview validated, but it ain't going to be me. These local low-rent Christian channels make plenty of money to stay on the air, so I wouldn't expect a Right-wing channel to have much trouble raising money.

A couple of nights ago I was wondering when this would happen. This might actually placate these insane nutjobs. I think Stewart is a masterful genius, and I think it is amazing what he does on his show. And literally amazing, not figuratively. But I think it has convinced a lot of folks to just sit back and laugh at things that should actually make you so mad you have to get up and take some action, or else you'll be so mad you clock somebody.

Figures that the "right" comedy would include some dummy talking about how black people's messages are beat-boxing/music and too long. No, jackass, you're living in the 80's. Stop watching mcdonald's commercials and thinking that black people dance and sing all day long no matter what they're doing. Oh, and they're laughing at you, not with you.

Man, see, the thing certain conservative media figures don't seem to get is that "The Daily Show" starts off with the premise of "what's in the news and what is funny about that." If the targets happen to be conservative much of the time, its because that's what's in the news (and because, for the last decade, doing jokes about the conservatives has been like shooting fish in a barrel - see Bill Clinton/blow jobs circa mid-90's).

If you start off writing comedy with the thought 'I want to make X political point,' well, as the Interweb says, 'yer doin' it wrong.'

Anecdotally, I think the majority of jokes that get told and re-told are right wing in their premises, and I think the material of most comedians on the standup circuit is the same. Pontificating further, I propose that this is because the material derives from common sense, and common sense is extremely right wing. People are just greedy, that's common sense; everyone's a bit racist, that's common sense; women talk a lot, that's common sense, etc.

This is not my experience. A couple of friends worked at a local comedy club and became acquaintances of his. I stopped by their place one night after work and "Larry" (I forget his real name) was there having a beer after the show. He'd changed out of his stage get-up and was, well, just some guy. They had to tell me who he was later. Seemed like a nice enough fellow to me, though I wasn't there long and we weren't discussing politics.

Of course, this was a few years before he hit it big, maybe he's different now.

For a bit to be truly funny, the person performing it has to have deep self awareness and allow themselves to be the butt of the joke if that's where the punchline leads them. There's no way to make "GRARR libruls!" funny by itself. Other than LTCG and the you-might-be-a-redneck guy, whose schticks basically play to stereotypes and never deviate from a tried and true formula, I don't see how likely it is that any comedian with a conservative bent is going to get up on stage and be all, "Yeah, I voted for Sarah Palin...so....wtf was that all about??" and make a name for themselves. Comedians who are great are unafraid to skewer their idols and surprise their audiences. These are not qualities that one often finds in a conservative.

And I was only kidding. This is our stalwart defender of traditional values, future Congressman Grammer.

From wikipedia:

Grammer has been married three times. . . His second marriage, to stripper Leigh-Anne Csuhany in 1992, lasted one year. Grammer says that she was abusive and that, after talk of divorce, she attempted suicide, which resulted in the miscarriage of their child. During this marriage, Grammer had a daughter out of wedlock, . . . with [a] hair and makeup stylist . . .
...
In 1998, Grammer filed a lawsuit against Internet Entertainment Group, which Grammer claimed had stolen from his home a videotape of him having sex with a woman.
...
Grammer began drinking at age nine . . . In 1988, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail for drunk driving and cocaine possession. He was again arrested for cocaine possession in August 1990 and was sentenced to three years' probation, fined $500, and given 300 hours of community service. In January 1991, he was given an additional two years' probation for violating his original probation through additional cocaine use. In September 1996, he flipped his Dodge Viper while intoxicated and subsequently checked in to the Betty Ford Center for 30 days.
...
Grammer is a member of the Republican Party and has expressed an interest in someday running for United States Congress.

Hey, Kelsey Grammar may be a political douchebag, but I like to think I can separate the art someone creates from their personal views. I loved Frasier Crane on Cheers and on Frasier. Grammar is a good actor (well, it's a good character anyway), and if I come across an old episode, I won't turn it off because I disagree with the actor's views. Same goes for Orson Scott Card, John Voight, Dennis Miller, etc. Even Roman Polanski; he was a monster, but I'm a fan of his films.

Let's all agree that if a right winger brags that they now have "their own channel," we just smile and nod politely, or get upset and say that there should be a liberal channel. It's better to let this thing collapse on itself. If we fight it, it'll just make us look bad, and there will be less terrible shows to laugh at.

Media Matters and Everything Is Terrible will have a field day.

ahahaha the guy who plays biff is basically the republicans' best bet because at least he's only pretending to be a mildly retarded rapist

Hey, Biff was in Freaks and Geeks, so I count this as a loss for the good guys.

Well, I think people want different things in their comedy. Some people like puns. Some people like to realize things that they hadn't thought of before (the all songs have the same 4 chords discussion a bit earlier, for example). Some people like abrupt references to 80's pop culture.

Most of the humor in that clip is kind of: "We're part of this big powerful group (conservatives/white people/parents). This group is awesome. This group is better than that other group (liberals/minorities/lazy teenagers)." So I look at that show and I don't think it's funny (because that's not how my sense of humor goes, so I don't really think of them as jokes)... but I think that it'll do well enough with its target audience, which is people who want to hear that message.

Remember Sarah Palin's famous VP speech? I didn't think it was funny -- I know a guy who thought it was hilarious. Saying 'community organizer' with a sneer isn't a joke. But it does say 'Look at us, we're powerful. We're better than those 'community organizers'. Any word which described President Obama could have been put in there, and the same people would have laughed, because the joke wasn't really about community organizers.

I think that's why 'conservative humor' has a very limited appeal outside its target audience. That sort of thing comes off as kind of nasty, and you'd better be really funny or insightful if you're not likable.

(This is not to say that there aren't comedians who are conservatives who are funny -- I did think Ron White was funny, but I don't remember him doing a lot of political stuff.)

For humor to be truly funny, it must have at least a kernel of truth to it. I don't think Fox, their viewers, or those responsible for the 'Right Network' fully understand this, and this is why conservative humor has and will continue to fail.

What's wrong with baby carrots?

And left-handed scissors? What the hell? Lefties are not allowed to have tools?

Well, left-handed scissors certainly aren't right.

Can't wait to watch more Right to Laugh.

I expected the jokes to not be funny, and the show fulfilled that expectation perfectly, but I wasn't expecting one of them to make a "white people have answering machines like this..." joke. Note to aspiring comedians: if you're thinking about telling a joke that is so stale it's been parodied on every single animated TV show that has been on American television in the last 20 years, you should really just go back to your day job.

Ed brought us Sarah Palin during the election and now Right Network, Tierney brought us Rick Santorum and John Yoo as regular columnists in the Inquirer.

Based on his one or two commentaries on the Freaks and Geeks DVD's, Wilson ("Biff", "Coach Fredericks") could easily be the best thing on the whole channel. I'm really curious about his show now.

Wow. That Right to Laugh trailer was painful and I didn't laugh once. I didn't even come close to breaking a smile. This coming from someone that will usually laugh at the drop of a hat. Hell, I've laughed along witht he laugh track the few times I've seen clips from Two and a Half Men just so I could relieve the tension of finding it unfunny.

For this entire clip I was desperately wanting to find an excuse to laugh, but apparently it was physically impossible.

Honestly, I'd love to see Grammer go head to head with Al Franken. If only to show that Franken is smarter and funnier.

Smarter, anyway. It's a race to the bottom to decide who between these is funnier.

Yeah I figured that was the joke, but by extension he is saying that left-handed people aren't right and, of course, The Left isn't right-- so lets get rid of them. I get the Right Wing humor of "The Left isn't right so let's get rid of it" but putting left-handed people (and their tools) on his list seems a bit off to me. Possibly I feel this way because lefties were actually stigmatized in the past for being sinister*.

Don't people usually think of South Park as libertarian? I haven't watched it, or heard much about it, for years, though, so I could definitely be wrong.

(As long as we're talking about animated shows, I'm a little surprised that right-wing types haven't tried to co-opt King of the Hill. Maybe Hank Hill is too tolerant for them.)

I think more than anything else, South Park is contrarian, and the general political lesson espoused is 'You guys are stupid for caring.'

South Park is funny right wing we'll-make-fun-of-everything-and-everyone comedy.

Nothing that has kids with Big Gay Al as a good friend, but mocks the hell out of Jesus, is right wing.

Well if you're going to define the Right Wing as being Jesus Loving, non-libertarian Racist Homophobes, then it's no wonder that the only "right wing" humour you're going to find is Unfunny Homophobic Racism.

I think that the problem here is that the stuff you laugh at can't be right wing because you laugh at it and the rest of the stuff is right wing because you hate it and it's plainly *not funny*.

As a community, we're probably the last people who'll laugh at a right leaning comedy show. Not because it isn't funny, but because we're too busy looking for reasons to be all grar.
posted by seanyboy at 9:33 AM on April 21, 2010

Not that I'm not saying the right does *appear* to be less funny than the left. I've got a crazy theory that it's all to do with fear. The right are generally more scared of change or difference, and this fear doesn't translate well to comedy. This is a pretty rocky theory though - so don't be poking it with any sticks.

Just want to point out that the only reason I described the humor of "Right to Laugh" as mostly right-wing is that the point of basically every joke in that preview (maybe with the exception of the health-care joke, which didn't get very many laughs) was some kind of thinly veiled Republican political talking point. Even the most rhetorically clever jokes about how Obama's presidency is an obvious mistake or how we should send "illegals" back where they came from can only be funny if you're not totally put off by the obviousness of the political agenda that they rest on. The people in that clip (I believe) weren't laughing because that guy's imitation of "every black guy's" answering machine was so spot-on; they were laughing because it played into their stereotypes of black people.

In a way, I think you're correct, though, in that we wouldn't be calling this stuff "right wing humor" if it was actually funny; we'd just call it humor. But to me, that's a feature of the cheap transparency of the jokes themselves, not our preconceptions about what right wing humor is or has to be.

I agree. I would also agree with your statement that SouthPark is right wing, and would also add that King of the Hill is right wing, because it makes fun of the sacred cows that us lefties hold dear. Remember the SP global warming episode? Or the KOTH episode where they try to organize a concert for the environment.

I firmly believe that you can be a right winger and not be a racist or homophobe or sexist or a jerk. Hank Hill is this kind of fellow. He even voted for George Bush in 2000!
