Quasi-amateur art porn of scruffy, impoverished, underexercised readers of ‘Butt’ magazine

A kind of Hump Day manqué. Travis Matthews started out directing semi-explicit, often naked video interviews, shot in their own bedrooms, of the scruffy, impoverished, underexercised gay intellectuals who are a core readership of Butt magazine (previously; before that). Thus begat In Their Room (SFW), which “veers into the bedrooms of eight different men where you see them doing everything from the most banal to the most erotic.” Sounds like a smashing idea for a feature film in the “amateur porn” genre, does it not? After an open casting call for a guy willing to bottom, whom he duly found, Matthews has released a 20-minute trailer (definitely NSFW).

Wawawa Huminah huminah huminah

I always loved that magazine.

Seriously, on a real note, it is exceptionally affirming to see regular guys like this being shown in ways that highlight their sexiness and attractiveness. I wish I'd seen images like this growing up. It really makes me feel good about myself in a way that all the six pack abs and flawless skin I see on TV and in movies does not.

Thanks, Butt magazine!

Is the last link to a trailer of In Their Room? It appears to be of another project entirely: I Want Your Love. I'm confused.

Still, interesting post. Thank you!

I'll be in my bunk.
Good post!

That's really interesting. It reminds me of 9 Songs by Michael Winterbottom (one of my favorite directors). When I'm back in the US I'll have to remember to track down both of these films.

Yes, Hippybear, the link is indeed to the feature-film followup, which has a different title.

PINUPS also features more average-lookin' guys.

I was hoping to make another reference to Ingmar Bergman, but it is probably not going to happen here.

"scruffy, impoverished, underexercised gay intellectuals who are a core readership of Butt magazine"

*harumph*

One spends one's life being weird - a freak, and eventually comes to accept it.

Then one day one finds he is a category - a marketing demographic.

*sighhhhhh*

Isn't Butt great? I think I found it via Metafilter. I love how it comes in the mail, all clandestinely wrapped from Holland, my little bit of import porn. Only I read it for the articles. Really! In Their Room doesn't really do much for me, but maybe I'm impatient. "I Want Your Love" looks like nice porn-with-real-people, but again not doing a lot for me.

I feel so lucky to be gay in 2010.

Yay, it looks like the Shortbus revolution is continuing! I never thought I'd live to the see the day real-people-having-sex-in-a-sexy-way was actually able to be incorporated into the language of a broader cinema. This is just terrific, and thanks for posting!

(And I do realize that BUTT has been brining queer smut and intellectual/cultural material together for quite awhile now -- I'm just thrilled to see this sort of thing cross over into cinema; and speaking of BUTT, if you weren't lucky enough to be in on it in the early days, the BUTT book is absolutely wonderful and essential).

So to be an intellectual you still have to smoke? I thought that rule ended in 1997.

And on the topic- stop smoking in bed, it's disgusting. Step onto your balcony. Ass.

Off topic, but I really wish HDV didn't make rapid movements look like they're shot in some kind of strobe effect. It's really distracting. Or maybe that's not so off topic.

Yeah, yeah it's nice... but I'm still waiting on someone to have the guts to try a similar treatment with violence. I'd like to see what Tarantino could do with real people really getting their faces kicked in... among other things...

in their room seems a little oddly moody for me, though i want your love looks pretty cute. i think it's funny to see these guys are described as 'underexercised', when they are petty much just normal guys. lucky me, that's what i've always liked (the guys on fitness magazines look more insectile to me as i get older).

i think one of the top coolest things about the internet is amateur porn. not that i'm an addict or anything, and i haven't made any of my own, but i find it so charming and intimate, down to the surroundings, camera angles, body positions, and where the solo guys fix their gaze. plus there's often the bit of comedy at the end where somebody picks up the remote control or keyboard to turn the camera off--i love it when they leave that in! it's like a secondary money shot, even better when you can see the guy's face when he does it; it captures something i can't well describe.

ah, men!
