I hadn't realized that DADT had already been suspended.

Look, I know you're trying to be funny. But I hate it when people say this, and things like it.

It is the law (as in Congress says so) that homosexuals cannot serve in the military. Don't Ask Don't Tell was Bill Clinton's (largely successful) attempt, through executive order, to allow gays to serve in the military by instituting a policy wherein merely hearing that somebody's gay does not count as sufficient grounds to begin an investigation. Basically, an officer has to either walk in on you having gay sex, or have some sort of physical evidence, to go forward with an investigation.

Suspending or repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell is a return to the pre-Clinton days when an officer hearing, "Yo, you know Martinez is gay," would launch a full criminal investigation.

I really hope it was a sadistic drill sergeant who forced them to do the caramel dance, as that would make it truly hilarious, and have grave implications for what the new media means for our boys in uniform.

The sweetness of the third video was pretty much ruined for me with the photographs of the blindfolded and sometimes bloodied Iraqi prisoners. I do get that gallows humor is a natural byproduct of war, though.

Thanks, availablelight! I've watched the official video clip to Telephone a couple of times and never liked the song, but the Afghanistan version somehow made it click for me.

This set of videos makes me proud to be an Army Specialist. Most of the Army guys in these videos were rockin' the Sham Shield. Gotta love it!

Anytime you give a bored, stressed 19-year-old a video camera, magic happens.

Next, the men of some unit take turns humping an ottoman.

The footstool, not the obsolete nationality.

Basically, an officer has to either walk in on you having gay sex, or have some sort of physical evidence, to go forward with an investigation.

Wait, what? I thought the whole point of DADT was that you simply are not allowed to even MENTION that you're gay. I mean, as far as I know, Daniel Choi is facing DADT-based discharge because he went onto The Rachel Maddow Show and said that he is gay. There was no physical evidence of his actually engaging in gay sex, he simply SAID he was gay, and now they're working on a discharge. I don't really understand what you're saying here.

You might find the book (and accompanying film) Coming Out Under Fire to be of interest. It covers the homosexual experience in the US military and was published prior to DADT's creation. It was quite a fascinating read and watch.

Yeah, I'm sure the fundamentalist muslim family whose wedding gets bombed by a predator drone will be thrilled to see american troops doing lulzy, homoerotic dance routines.

It's enforcement is wildly uneven, of course, but having lived in Norfolk following DADT (and therefore being friends with lots of enlisted Navy, since they make up a giganto portion of 20sometimes there), I can verify that this is the case. Admitting you're gay gets you booted.
