I don't get it. I have AT&T@home, but this still loads as fast as on my dialup. Are you too displeased with your cable modem connection? Do you think there is anyone out there who has actually called tech support about this? Or other ad's like it. "You have new mail" masquerading as a real window etc. This is a very stupid thread I'm starting. Be advised

I harbor contempt for the pukes that utilize such ads, but I find it far more disconcerting to think that people are 'fooled' by them. "Oh boy - I've got new mail!" -click-

No, but I've encouraged all my professional banner-making friends to ignore their clients when they ask for anything that looks like a Windows alert message. It's lame, annoying, and the advertiser loses identity because the banner is Windows-branded. Not a lot of room for advertiser identity.

My friend clicked one that 'warned' her about her connection not being optimized. She knows nothing about computers -- she uses the PC just to check e-mail and write papers -- so she fell for it.

Surely my friend can't be the only one who ever clicked one of these things. They must be getting enough responses to make it worth running them month after month.

I suppose that's their target market: net-naive people who use computers but know nothing about them. People like that are probably easily scared or shamed into quick purchases. And such advertisers are bastards.

[No, 'my friend' isn't really me, though that clicking the monkey's penis thing sounds interesting.]

So why, exactly, did you start it?

I think someone should file a class action suit against cabel modem companies -- Optimum Online, my provider, advertises speeds "up to 100x faster!" What they don't tell you is that once you get to about 10x, the speed of server on the other end becomes the weakest link. *sigh*

To see how long it took for someone to ask exactly that. . .

I friend of my mine said that where he works a Linux user got very confused when a Windows-styled ad told them their dial-up wasn't optimised. They were only connected using a network.
