Two Americans, doing odd jobs in the Philippines.

When Tory and Jason lost their jobs in the U.S., they found new ones in the Philippines, where they’ve spent the past year driving a taxi through the boondocks. In their latest video, they’ve decided to sell taho on the streets. The two are posting updates on their “job experiment” on Twitter - followers have been tweeting them suggestions for their next odd job.

For those of you (like me) who don't want to watch loads of YouTube videos to get the gist of what this is about, there's an article (linked to on the Twitter feed)
here.

For those of you (like me) who don't watch loads of YouTube videos unless they are linked on Metafilter, this is BS.

They used to be Mormon missionaries

That should have prefaced the entire post, enabling the reader to understand that we'd be watching some rather uninteresting video footage of two gringos having a go at the taxi and taho games in the Philippines under the guise of being unable to find work back in their home country.

tl;dr: these guys are boring and unimaginative.

point of note -- the American slang term "boondocks" has its roots in the Tagalog word for mountain: "bundok" ... so, the premise that they were driving around Cagayan in the hilly north was promising.

But the fact that the footage is driving through what looks like the same six blocks of a city, begging people to ride their cab is not what it says on the tin.

Plus their Tagalog proficiency makes this the equivalent of listening to the "me love you long time" monologue from Full Metal Jacket ... which can be a little tiresome when it's running non-stop for seven minutes.

Fair criticism by others before me, I guess, but I cam away from this wanting to try the taho. I dunno, maybe "m at a low blood sugar point already this morning. I've never had this stuff and I loathe bubble tea, which I guess has the same or similar sago pearls, but something about the silky smooth tofu mixed with vanilla/caramelized sugar...

two gringos having a go at the taxi

Do Filippinos call US Citizens or white people gringos? Or do they call all foriegners that? I didn't think it was used much out of the Western Hemisphere.

Travel doesn't broaden the mind any more does it?

My wife, a Visayan, says that they just call people puti (Cebuano for "White") or kano, short for Amerikano.

I did not know that YouTube has a whole "white privilege" section.
