Spy vs. Spy meets Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend. I had no idea this existed, but then again, much of the anarchist history of the early 20th century has fallen by the wayside in popular consciousness. Interesting -- thanks for posting.

The future we live in does not have enough giant pneumatic tubes.

And what's with all these vats of "soft soap" just hanging around?

Ultimately, Stabshootski the Bolshevik would have better luck.

From the website: Sometimes I worry you folks must think I live under a rock, but I will admit that I was surprised to see that sort of humor so early in the 20th Century (I think of that sort of silliness as more of a Cold War thing, but here it is).
So there was no comedy before the A-bomb?

That reminds me, I must think about booking next year's ski trip.

"Anarchist" is a pretty interesting word. I think that the word was used (in its time) as shorthand for Jew. Pretty much the same way that terrorist is used now as shorthand for Muslim.

In that context the cartoons make for quite depressing reading.

I've never laughed at a comic strip before. This is the first.

Just been trying to find more evidence of my "anarchist equivalant to jew back in the very early 20th century" position, but not turning very much up.

So just ignore that for a while.

I don't know, seanyboy. Anarchist assassinations loomed pretty large in the public consciousness after the assassinations of Nicholas II in 1881, President Carnot in 1894, PM Canovas in 1897, Elizabeth of Bavaria in 1898, Umberto I in 1900 and McKinley in 1901, none of whose killers, I believe, were Jewish. "Terrorist" and "anarchist" are similar in that fear of them lurking around every corner is being exploited to the detriment of society, but I don't think there's a specifically anti-Semitic weight to the term.

And this is why we preview. Sorry!

I think this is probably where I got my Jews = Anarchists thing from.

It's a long old thing, worth watching, but the tl;dw version is "Let's use current newsreaders to read stuff from the late 19th century so we can see how the current media / political reaction to extremist Islam is identical to what we were saying about the anarchists 100 years ago."

Can Someone in the US tell me if they are allowed to watch the documentary I linked to. I'd love to SLYT it. I think it's an awesome piece of film making.

Something I find funny is how his Russian accent seems more informed by how Russian *looks* than how Russians *sound*.

Re Anarchist Jews, Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman had Jewish-sounding names, though IIRC they were both atheists.

Not that it mattered, of course, to anti-semites.
