Eugene Field's Complete Tribune Primer (with illustrations). Best known for Wynken, Blynken and Nod, Field has some words of advice for young people.

As does an unrelated William S. Burroughs.

Would you like to Be an Editor and Sneak down an Alley?

Still pp. 24 & 25 are among my favorites. Should we tell everyone that these were your bedtime stories? So glad Google Books scanned this. That's one more off my list (to scan & share with the world).

This was one of my favorite discoveries as a child. As a matter of fact, I have a hundred year old copy of the book on my desk I've been leafing through the last week or two. It sure punctures the image of Field as a mild-mannered children's poet!

pg 81-
Do you see that Candidate over There? He is standing still. He is a Democratic Candidate. If he were a Republican he Would be Running. Democratic Candidates are not real Candidates. They can not Run. They do not even Walk. When you are very Tired and Want to rest you ought to Become a Democratic Candidate.

My dad, and klang's grandfather, had a book of Field's political writings. While Adridne quotes Field faithfully, no politician was safe from Field's barbed sword pen. Here, an excerpt of his political opinions from his Chicago based column "Sharps and Flats." He cranked out almost 2000 words daily for this Morning News column. He would have been quite the blogger.

I believe my mother had Wynken, Blynken and Nod memorized (having a good number of kids will do this... i'm near the end of the line!) and I had mistakenly attributed it to someone else. Thank you for sharing!!
