Metafilter has the O RLY attack. It lacks the Best of the Web attack, sadly.

Is there a save feature? Seems like I lose all my favimons when closing the window.

Metafilter.com killed my entire (two-icon) army.

metafilter.com used Rickroll, but favimon.com was not hurt!
metafilter.com used Treaty of Westphalia! favimon.com took 3 damage.
metafilter.com used Double Rainbow! Extra damage! favimon.com took 3 damage.

Favicon stats and skills appear to be deterministic.

I should point out that the slogan for this site is "Gotta cache 'em all!". That's the slogan.

4chan.org has given up!

Maybe wait to submit this until a little further along in its beta? I loved it while I could play it, but it seems terminal now.

This. I tried in both Chrome and Firefox, in each I fought Google.com, and the game stopped working half way through. Cool idea, though.

Hey, this is my Project! It might be a little unstable, hope it isn't crashing on people. I answered some questions on the Project page.

It would be cooler if they weren't all blown up and blurry.

It looks best in Firefox 3.6 and IE, which support CSS properties that lets me retain the pixel effect when resizing icons. There is no way to do that in Chrome or Safari, so they look blurry in those browsers right now.

In Firefox 4 beta you can just keep on clicking on an attack as fast as possible and it will spam attacks out of turn order. Metafilter.com was going to kick my ass until Favimon.com suddenly launched a barrage of ten consecutive attacks.

Thanks Pyry - that shouldn't be possible, obviously! I'll take a look at it.

Ha! Zombocom has a "Welcome to Zombocom" skill, which "confuses" Zombocom and doesn't do shit. Fantastic.

Hm, favimon was twice as fast as wordpress, but we still alternated turns regularly.

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions! My site was hammered yesterday after Favimon was posted here and on The Daily What, but I've tweaked some of the scripts to reduce the load on the server, and it seems better today.

I added a FAQ just now which clarifies how stats work and answers some other questions.

I discovered a bit of cheese... Slate's "Contrarian" is basically unbeatable. It always takes 2 health and always receives 2 health, regardless of attack and defense power. No attackers I met could take it down. They would have needed to do 3 damage 4 times in a row. That just doesn't happen.

Wow, you collected a small army! You're right, Contrarian is one of the most powerful attacks in the database right now, especially because the 'drain health' moves are unaffected by defense stats. Thanks for the note, I might tweak this a little.

p.s. today's update may or may not include random santa hats.

Hey team lowkey, some of the favicons you collected are really interesting, and I'd add them to the database if I knew what sites they were - what's the key in the upper right corner? And the little coloured splats next to Huffington? And the rainbow W?
posted by oulipian at 6:25 AM on December 18, 2010

The key in the upper right is lowkey.org . Designed it myself ;)

The splotches are travelocity.com , and the rainbow W is webkinz.com . I got them while randomly playing with the autocomplete.

You should add nerdist.com , the black and yellow lines in the middle of the bottom row. It's the only animated favicon I caught.

I just went looking for more animated icons, and definitely wanted to add knightknetwork.com to my army, but for some reason the game didn't pull the animated knight. His little castle isn't bad, though.

It's the only animated favicon I caught.

Wow, nice find. I didn't even realize that was possible. It happens very rarely, because I'm using two different favicon retriever apps, and the primary one converts the icons into PNGs, losing any animation. So you only end up with an animated favimon if the first retriever can't find the animated .gif favicon, but the backup app can (it doesn't convert the GIFs).

Knightnetwork would be cool. The site contains code for two different favicons, which seems to confuse the favicon retriever apps - I can't get it to show up at all.

I'm planning to add a bunch more sites to the database later today or tomorrow, so I'll be sure to add the ones you mentioned. Thanks!

Cool. I don't know why favicons delight me so (I even made one for music.metafilter.com back when it was new), but I'm really enjoying collecting them. This is a great little game.
posted by team lowkey at 2:07 PM on December 18, 2010

Oh poop. It froze up while trying to retrieve a new site, so I've lost my little army. I was previously playing in the middle of the night to avoid that, but I wanted to see if I could find some more animated gifs.

I knew a freeze was coming, because my attacks were starting to fail. But for those, I could just try again until it worked.

Some kind of save feature would be nice. Or maybe just a button to cancel or retry an action. Or a time-out. As it stands, any failure during the attackers turn means you have to reload, losing all progress.
posted by team lowkey at 2:28 PM on December 18, 2010

I just updated the game, fixing a couple of glitches. If the server is getting overloaded you should at least just get error messages instead of the game hanging entirely. I also added a ton of new sites to the database.

I'm working on the best way to implement a save feature.
